short-term volunteering in india?

I'm going to be in India for about a month starting next week, and I've belatedly decided that I'd like to do some volunteering. The problem is that I probably won't be able to stay for more than a few weeks (I'm starting in Chennai and leaving from Delhi and I'd like to see *some* things along the way) so I'm not sure how well this will work. Does anyone here have any suggestions?

You could try Mother Theresa's. They must have places all over the country. I volunteered at the orphanage in Calcutta and also at their place in Varanasi. Why don't you do some web searching about their organization? I must warn you though, when I was there in '88 they were talking about stopping the shorter volunteer programs because it was turning out to be more hassle than help. Imagine having to train new people every few days and you see their point. Anyway, do look into it. It was an eye-opening experience, and not in the way you'd expect. Good luck!

hi there try the org STA who do work programes all over india. i am also from ireland and going over in a couple of weeks for as long as possible so good luck
