The great Shannon Charity River Challenge which is in its fourth week is due to finish in about eight days time, weather permitting, at the Ocean! Don & Jack, our two intrepid wonders (Don is in his 72nd year and Jack has full blown multiple sclerosis under control with herbal medications) have had a few problems – mainly the mast breaking twice in very bad Irish weather across Loughs – but each time it was almost as if it had been planned! The second time the mast had just been battered (they are sailing and rowing the whole way from the source to the sea on the Shannon with the engine being locked at the outset) a hired cruiser had got into trouble just alongside them. They put the dinghy out and rowed over and got the people out of trouble, only to find it was an editor in chief of the Daily Mail, who then did a great article on the whole trip. The proceeds of the trip are for the children here – mostly for trust funds to be set up for them for at least Meena and Magesh’s education to be completed and for Tony perhaps his long awaited arm and an electric wheelchair – but we will be happy if there’s just enough for the trust funds!
RTE Radio has been following the lads along the route and have done two programs during the trip itself plus three prior.
Lads, we wish you continued success in your mighty fund raiser for us, continued courage and most of all, your safety in getting back home in the end to your loved ones. We thank you with all our hearts for your wonderful efforts in the most courageous fund raiser ever done in the name of our children – you are two mighty Gents that’s for sure!
We’ll let you know the outcome of the trip when it’s over, but it could be sometime before even we ourselves know what funds may have been raised!
May the craic be with ye
