returning to india - keen to help

hi i am returning to mumbai in the new year and wanted to get peoples opinions on how if at all i could help in the aid relief being carried out in south eastern states of india

i am not a doctor etc or have any trade...(IT administrator for 4 yrs thats all) but i just wonder if there is anything i could do...would i just be in the way? using up vital resources etc ? or could I make a difference?

i tried calling the british red cross but it just rings and rings and doesnt get through

anyones opinions much needed

i feel a little uneasy at returning just for a holiday and yet i appreciate that by my being in india i am helping the economy etc....i just feel so helpless seeing all those pictures on the tv.....

is it a realistic possibility that i could help in some way? should i just return and use my pounds and roops in the country....maybe that will be my contribution? but could i seriously go to tamil nadu and assist in the aid? i dont wanna be a burden and yet i want to help

anyone know what i mean?

I saw on the CNN newsticker that aid agencies can only take volunteers who are entirely self-sufficent--those who have all their own food, water, and housing. Nothing can be spared.

It seems the Gov't in India is struggling with the same question. Information and help lines are offering little or any of either. I would suspect that other than entering India with an Internat. Aid organisation there would be little chance of physically assisting.

There are various centres being opened for donations of material assistance but it seems that even some of these are finding it difficult to get that throug to the areas in need.

It may improve over the next foew days.
