Obstetric Fistula
Obsteric Fistula is a terrible condition affecting 2 million poor young women in Africa, the Arab world and the Indian subcontinent. 100,000 new cases emerge each year. It is an entirely preventable condition. I recently contacted the UN rep for India for the UN-backed Campaign to End Fistula. Although much of the focus is on Africa, he told me that he recently did some research which indicated the extent of the problem in India - and it is indeed a problem in certain states according to his research. Unfortunately, however, apart from his research, there is a lack of data for India.
Read about what fistula is here: "Voice of Hope" in the New Sunday Express 7 Oct 2007 (Interview with Natalie Imbruglia and her involvement in the Campaign to End Fistula) Then visit the website listed in that article if you are interested in finding out more/how to help: www.EndFistula.org |
