Hey everyone! Bit of a random question today!?!

I have a degree in music and am wanting to volunteer as a teacher in india, and as I specialise in music I was wondering if anyone knew of any charities/schools who may require or organise an appointment as a music teacher?
I've searcher the web but because its quite specific i've not found anything - can anyone help?

If there isn't then maybe i'm on a wild goose chase...!

well ..I assume that as teacher or western music, you would have little scope in charitable institute..maybe somehwere in Goa OR pondicherry..

But you can earn when in private classes OR institutes..

Music teachers...

I am sure there's lots of places which might be interested, although most might not have their own musical instruments. We've actually got a couple of girls coming over to help our kids with music, although just basic bells and harmonica's.. Should be great fun, although I'm sure there will be more noise rather than music for a while

If you're interested in coing to help us then there's lots of informaiton on our website (we're based in Goa), although just to warn you, we do get LOTS of applications (as we're free to volunteer for - not many are now-a-days), there's a volunteer calendar thing on our website to give you an idea of when you can volunteer...

I am about to begin teaching at Woodstock School in Mussoorie India. I know they have an excellent music program. And I am sure they would love to have an experienced musician to volunteer there.Here is the link to the schools website. www.woodstock.ac.in/ But be careful, if you look at the website you will become much more interested in becoming a part of this wonderful place. OMG..woodstock is one of the more reputed boarding schools in India...you must have lot of talent to work there..

Thanks for all these great suggestions, I was thinking more down the route of the children walking tall posts - charities or schools who really would benefit from someone with my limited experience but who could not afford to pay for someone - but then these sorts of places are, I imagine correct me if i'm wrong, probably not going to need someone who is trained in western music?!

Maybe you need to define "Western" music. What do you have a degree in? Classical might be a bit specialized (but far from unthinkable I guess), while pop music would certainly not fall on deaf ears so to speak I think, certainly not in a not-so-strict setting. Kids there love their Foreigner and Metallica and disco garbage and all that stuff, like kids anywhere.

In a non-formal setting I imagine the activity alone would count for something, you can adapt to your pupils' wishes.

well thats just it because im more the classical side of it!! I'm useful for the basic theory behind music - obviously I wouldn't be drumming classical music into anyones head - i just had the idea of maybe helping with singing or rhythm related 'stuff' or maybe even piano...Thought it may have been a long shot!

Hm I don't know. I'd say it's the interaction and your own flexibility in it that counts. That's the best I have to say I guess. It's not like Western classical music will be totally alien to all Indians, and besides it's fun to goof around with music, period.

Other than that, search around for outfits that might suit you I guess. I'd be surprised if it wouldn't be appreciated anywhere.

No its not. As an example, my son studied it formally for eight years and my daughter six, with Trinity school exams et al.

But

-if the OP wants to be involved in a charity, pure western classical will not be too appropriate, or enjoyed.

-a school may appreciate classical music being taught.

- most classical musicians should be able to play or teach other stuff anyway, at least at a basic level.

-most importantly, does the OP have a right to work in India?

Would be wonderful to find somebody in Landour/Mussoorie that could teach me singing - if they have a music program, there hmm... I've been taking singing lessons, more irregularly than regularly, more for fun than for ? I just enjoy singing. Dreaming of a career as a background singer in Hindi movies....

The 'Delhi Music Society' run 'Delhi School of Music' where one of the subjects is Western Classical. Google for their contacts. They do have paid teachers, but I'd be surprised if they wud be averse to a volunteer.
I think they cud give u info on the volunteering front as well.
