Long term social/conservation work

Hi,

I was wondering if i could hear from a few people about long term social or environmental work.

I am located in Mumbai and do not really have any experience as a volunteer yet. I work as a recruiter and am looking to spend a few years working for a cause. Would prefer working in north east india or uttranchal.
Since i am looking at this as a long term involvement, and also would not expect a NPO to cover my living expenses; what are the feasible options here for me? I do not have savings enough to pay for rentals or food.

It may make sense to work part time to take care of these expenses and spend the rest of my time towards social work? But considering the rate of unemployment and job opportunities in these places, do I stand a decent chance of earning a basic living?

I know these are questions not too easy to answer but even opinions are welcome.

Thanks.

Hiya, I'm sorry I don't have any advice to offer you but I was wondering if you managed to reach a decision or if you found any avenues to pursue.

I'm in pretty much the same boat as you. However, I'm interested in conservation/environment volunteering and it doesn't have to be long-term. So far I've been able to find 2 NGOs that look interesting -- ATREE and CSE. I'm going to be contacting them soon (if you're interested, a Google search should get you to their websites easily).

What I'm still not sure about is how do I go about funding myself for the duration of the volunteering. If anyone else on IndiaMike could offer any kind of suggestion or brainy ideas, I would be very grateful for the help (as, I'm sure, would be the OP).

This may also prove helpful: http://charitiesinindia.blogspot.com...ntal-ngos.html. Also, another thread I started a long time ago: How to participate in Wildlife Conservation in India. In case you were wondering why I've been sitting on this idea for 2 years, well it's a good question and it's mainly because I took a whole year out to do an MSc (not to mention it took me almost as long to finalize where I would be doing it). But I'm looking again now. Better late than never.
