I have read lots of the posts about working in the hospices, but wasnt really clear on whether or not you can just turn up? someone said that you need to register in the morning or something? is this ture? if so could you please give me some more details! If anyone has volunteered there, can you please give me a short description of what it entails,

I am going to volunteer at sisters of mercy in november this year,I do think you need to register.I got all my info from the book "from here to nirvana",it has all the numbers and address and a rundown of what you can expect.plus hundreds of other ashrams and yoga centers.I would give you all the info now but I lent my book out to a friend.I hope this helps.

Etin is right. FWIW I believe the registering in the morning is correct. Around Kolkata's Sudder Street you'll find plenty of volunteers staying in the various guesthouses to give you the latest info, esp. the Salvation Army guesthouse but not just there. In short, as far as I know you can just go there, ask around for the latest ins & outs and get down to business.

For an alternative non-religious avenue check out Dr. Jack Preger's Calcutta Rescue which some friends of mine have worked for and spoke highly of.

edit: I'm having trouble finding anything like a homepage but assuming you mean Mother Theresa's work the correct name is Missionaries of Charity if you want to look around. I wouldn't be surprised if we're getting several groups mixed up however.
