Since you're there already, you could enquire with the local Tibetan refugee scene about teaching opportunities or other work to be done. There may be farming projects, at least that's what another member went and did in Ladakh.

Matei,

Welcome to the thread !

I really should be sending a private message - but I do not think you can receive any at the moment - anyways,

I have a Mizoram thread in the "Other Areas" section under "States of India". Would you like to contribute there? Would love to receive some info regarding travelling there. The thread is called "Mizoram in January 2008". (I am supposed to be travelling there for 4 nights in Aizawl in January 2008)

Thankx.

PS: you can send me a private message if you wish.

White, Best wishes for your noble thoughts but I do not think it is a good idea for a foreigner doing volunteer work in north-east India. I have spent 9 years in that part of India (Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh).
1) It is considered to be a troubled area with many active insurgent groups. An abducted white-man is worth 10 locals for bargaining with Indian govt.
2) Indian army and intelligence will get panicky as soon as you will ask for permission to visit the inner areas (and as far as I think inner area is all of north-east for a non-Indian).
3) Working with missionaries involves even more problems since they have been continuously accused of converting poor Indians. You might face issues with local right-wing Hindu groups as well.

I am sorry if I am scaring you but touring an area is way different than living and working in that area among locals. Hope you think before gettign involved.
