India, dowry deaths and support

Nagwa Foundation offers medical and legal aid to women in India who, because of insufficient dowry, have been purposely set afire by their in-laws or husband and are mutilated for life. We aim to achieve our objective by circulating information, among other things by means of educative street theatre and public debate, enabling women and children to freely express themselves and stand up for their rights. Finally, we aim to establish a safe house, which will be managed by the women themselves.

For details, please visit our homepage:

Nagwa Foundation

One of the ways to raise funds, is to sell photocards with hand printed envelopes (non-profit).

The images we show will be confronting, but as an Indian activist told me: what the world doesn't see, she doesn't know.

Mirjam, your site brought a lump to my throat.

75 women are killed because of insufficient dowry every single day...

This is a scandal that deserves to be publicised by whatever means. You need make no apology for the graphic pictures.

I am working on a link-page, from where you can read more about the figures, the women, the actions etc. . Yes, I need publicity to get enough funds for this safehouse and the operations we are planning, but promoting a website with 'bad news' is really difficult. I cannot blame people to click the page away ..... for not wanting to see it. The problem is that India is one of the best countries to travel, if you ask me, but this is another reality which needs publicity and especially help.

By the way, if anyone can suggest another forum (about India or women or human rights) where we can make our work known, please give us suggestions! They are very welcome!

Land for Residence in place of giving dowry!

Dear Madam/Sir,
I married without taking dowry, I even warned my in-laws not to raise that issue either before me or in my absentia. In fact, I want register marriage. My elder women wanted a traditional marriage. But I filtered all the unnecessary customs and traditions, but allowed very simple marriage. Now I am working as Sales Officer in a Real Estate Company and promoting, writing letters to several people to Book a land for Residence to the daughters, instead of giving dowry. I am waiting for public response. 9866270103. If any body understood the relevance of my this comment or letters, please come
orward.

parents of girl child must book a plot, instead of giving dowry.
By doing so, they are upholding dowry prohibition act, 1961 and strengthening social base of their girl child .

I will further promote this campaign and interested to launch a 'No Dowry' Club. In this club, all the persons will not give dowry, instead of doing so, they will give fixed assets to the girl child. If they don't have children, they will adopt a girl child and give their fixed assets. I invite suggestions from the public.

I am very interested to hear of these organisations. It is good to know and support people like yourselves finding practical solutions to those aspects of a culture that people prefer not to think about, no matter where in the world it is. No apologies are needed. As a visitor to India I think it is important to be aware of all sides to its many facets. I wish you well.
