I am terrible, I know but are ther any paying jobs?
I know this is a volunteer thread but I was wondering if there any paying jobs in India and if they are worth it. Worth it I mean to make enough money to live in case I do run out of money. I have taught English in Taiwan is there a market for that in India?

forget about teaching English for any reasonable pay. Sometimes Bollywood will pay for extras if you look "Western" enough.
Rajneesh used to pimp out western girls low on funds at his commune, ( I have it first hand, so there!!!) but don't know if that is still an option.

I agree with Bijapuri that it is very difficult to find a job teaching English. Since English is very common and taught also at schools. In Taiwan, China, etc...it's easier to find such a job and make a living off of it.
Even in place like Mcleod Ganj where there are many people teaching English, most volunteer their time or swap for room and board. |

Abit of advice, DO NOT go to China! I am currently teaching English in Tangshan, Hebei and it is one utterly depressing place. I get paid Y3,000 a month. I have fairly decent free accommodation and all my bills bar my phone bill are paid for. Sounds good so far? But don't make the mistake thinking China is like Taiwan, once you get out of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou areas its backward and like the rest of China very TACKY. I knew a teacher who was placed at a University not far from me but had experience in Taiwan, she lasted 6 days! I came with Ciee, l think there web addr is www.ciee.org, they have teaching placements in China and Thailand. And like the other 60 odd of us who came to China l wish to god l had gone to Thailand instead! I have 9 weeks left of my contract and l can't wait to get out of here. Especially after having found out that the 'officials' of the University have been checking through documents and private files in my flat whilst l was out, also they have put spys in my class and to add to this l get charged 3x more on my phone bill a 'foreign surcharge', although this apparently is not supposed to be happening anymore, corruption is rife. Anyway l am out of here in 9 weeks and my Indian adventure begins!

Anyone who teaches in China has got to be hard up or desperate for cash unless you work for an international school and are on an Expat deal. Y3000 ?? That is the lowest wage I have heard anyone get paid teaching English in China. You could get paid HKD200 an hour teaching english in Shenzen or Guanzhou if you are a (caucasian) native speaker. Bijapuri Bollywood is hiring a lot of "Tall and Muscular" western guys these days for their action flicks. This is the in thing I guess. Bill

Basically l had just graduated from University and studied Law (Major) and Mandarin (Minor). I missed out on travelling when my friends did when they where 18, so l decided on China 2 live and experience a different culture. My wage was in fact Y2600 but has just been increased! I know many teachers who are on Y2,200-Y3,300 range, because we came with Ciee they guarantee a minimum of Y2,200. I know others who are here voluntarily or earning as little as Y1,000 a month. I assumed for the higher wage bracket you would need some experience or teaching qualification? I have heard from other people l could get so much more in South Korea, Malayasia and a private school in Chennai (l think?) offered a friend of mine something like 600 US dollars a month! I am a native speaker but l'm of indian descent, although in China l sometimes get mistaken for someone of turkish descent (from Xinjiang) and chinese people view them as 'barbarians'! Are you caucasian? What are your thoughts on China? I certainly notice notice how caucasian people are treated differently to myself. Although this doesn't bother me because l prefer to be out of the limelight. However a friend of mine who is teaching here and she is of African descent has experienced racism, she has been refused entry to restaurants and spat at in the streets, aswell as the constant stares. Which l also get but there mostly curious as to where l'm from (Xinjiang, American, Australian or Indian are typical) but with her it is very much a different reaction. Having met many other teachers in the 8 months l've been here, the majority regret coming to China, not so much because of the lower wages but because of the bureaucracy of the University system and more to the point there is nothing to China at all, everything is tacky, overly restored and just plain dull (bar about 2 places l've been), and l have travelled extensively. After 8 months l have come to hate this country with a passion and l'm certainly not the only one. I think this is because l question things more. Everything here is so hidden. What appears to be one thing is in fact quite another if you delve deep enough. Anyway, my friends have travelled to India and fell in love with the place and they visited me in China and couldn't stand the place. The end is almost in sight! |

I think getting a teaching position in private schools is not hard. You may get paid about 600US$/month. You can always find a job in private (like software) firm in bangalore, may be in Human resources department, or other department of your expertise. You can get paid more (like 1000USD). |

the bollywood option is the easiest. hang it on the causeway long enough and it will happen. pays between 700 to 1000rs per dya, it is work and it is long. that said the more you do it the more work you get. for women dancing and wearing bikinis does pay more. there is also this fad of having western women work as greeters at weddings, this pays pretty good.
