How do you give?

I'm helping a friend with a micro-charity/micro-philanthropy project. So far the donors have been limited to people she knows, which has us wondering how people pick where to spend their (I'm assuming) limited resources. So my question is this- How do you decide where and when to give (and how much)? Would you rather give to an NGO and let them use the money as they see fit or would you rather earmark it for a specific project and/or person? What sort of accountability/results do you hope to see? Is there something keeping you from giving more (other than lack of money)?

On a related note, if anyone knows of small NGO's in and around Delhi that have low overhead and don't have much in the way of large outside funding, please let us know.

Thanks,

Andy

For us, it has been personal involvement. My husband teaches violin to kids in a small orphanage in Gurgaon and that is the charity we are involved with.

Lack of time had me go for CRY. And about the amount, I had the 'Tithing' concept from the Bible. So I never had the dilemma of 'hey am I giving more than I can afford.....hey am I keeping more for myself' Just a simple arithmetic and am happy with what I gave and will start giving when I start earning again

But yes...being physically involved than just monetarily is more fulfilling/rewarding I believe. And in India I(we) have good number of places where we can just go and do something on our own. Some remote villages near my home town are good starting points for me.

BTW Glad I read ur post. I for some reason had stopped thinking about this. This got me started again.
