Flexible part time volunteering in Chennai?
Hi all,
I will be in Chennai for about 3 weeks, then I'll be traveling for a little over a month, then I'll be back in Chennai for another month. During my time in Chennai, I will be taking college classes from 9am-4:30pm, but I was interested in volunteering also... Maybe 5 or so hours a week. However, for reasons listed above, my schedule is kind of a disaster. Are there any places that would be able to use someone after 4:30? (or before 9 am?) And that wouldn't mind me taking a long break in the middle of volunteering? I am good with kids, I'm decent at building things, I speak english fluently. Location isn't that important as long as I can get there by bus or auto-- I am currently in Anna Nagar, but I go to Mylapore daily and will probably be living there after I come back from traveling. OR- are there any service type groups that would have organized service activities that I could go to sometimes? I'm going to look into the one at the college where I'm taking classes, but any others would be good too. Thanks for any input, sorry that my situation is so complicated! |

if you dont find something and still want to do something? and since your schedule is um... err... well so irregular i have an idea... dunno how much it will appeal to you.
The gurudwara (a sikh temple) at T Nagar relies almost exclusively on velunteers (there is a single full time employee i think that serves as a cook) to help out with the preparation of the meals that are served to the congregation (this is referred to as langar). Langar is served twice in the gurudwara in chennai. Once at 2 PM and once at 8:30 PM. and prep work for the latter starts somewhere between 4 and 6 in the evening. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gurudwara http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langar_(Sikhism) the links give a primer on these things and the articles are obviously cross linked to other related subjects. there hadnt been any replies and this was the only thing i could think of. PS: This does involve food for a huge gathering. the work is done in kinda like an assembly line like operation with each person only doing a small bit repeatedly.... except for the old hands who may do more... |
