Culture shock on returning & wish to volunteer
I've just returned to Australia from three months in India. I fell in love with so much in the country and I don't want my Indian experience to end. My middle class guilt won't let that happen as I'm currently going through the culture shock I didn't seem to get when I arrived there.
We have so much here in Australia and I want to help those with so much less but I don't know where to go to do so. I don't have much money so I don't really want to just throw money at an organisation. But what I do have is time, I want to work in an NGO. I don't want an NGO that is affiliated with any religion. I'm finding it difficult to find sites where I can volunteer or work instead of just donating. I'd love to be able to do something in Kashmir, but I'm not sure what. Any advice would be helpful and really appreciated. |

Do you mean an NGO based in India, or an international organisation that also happens to have a program in India?

Either I suppose, as long as the organisation is credible.
I'd like to work in India, rather than for India while in Australia. |

Fatkat, what happened to your plans? Do you have your next visa for India in your pocket or did you find another solution?

Many Paths of Social Service
Dear Fatkat,
We really appreciate your gesture and your will to work for India. There are many areas where you could find an outlet for this craving. - Education - Healthcare - Gender Issues - Livelihood - Nutrition AIDS..... Other issue which you need to decide is how much you would like to earn since there are rich NGOs and organisations like UNESCO/Action aid/Greenpeace etc. AND there are a lot of not-so-rich organisations. -- Then you need to decide in which part of the country you want to work. In case you want to see which types of jobs are available in India you can visit. triple w. devnetjobsindia.org / idealist.org,CRY.org / smile foundation / pratham / karmayogi.org. There is lots and lots of work to be done in India and every helping hand is welcome. Any questions you can get back to me. Riyaz |
