Cricket Charities in India

Hello, I am going to India in October (Calcutta) i have been once before. I am a qualified cricket coach and play cricket in UK and am involved with many cricket clubs. When I was last in India i was amazed about how whereever you go there are people playing cricket.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any organisations / charities that are involved in coaching / helping / developing cricket with young people who would need help / kit ( i have a large collection of used kit that i have collected)

If there is anyone who could help or who has any contacts then that would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your time in reading this message.

No advice, just that I find the idea commendable. I'm sure if all else fails, if you were to ask around on the ground (your hotel -- or certainly many a budget hotel if yours feels too up-branch for such mundanities --, local newspapers and their ads, local aid organizations, neighborhood schools, slum dweller support groups, municipal branches for that matter, etc.) you'd be directed to the right channels. (Scouring the web some more if you haven't already could obviously be a step in the meantime.)

Go for it Let us know how it works out.

ps Edit: Come to think of it, the Salvation Army hostels that I know of (namely in Mumbai and Kolkata) seem to mostly serve the function of cheap backpacker's lodging these days. However, I'm sure they're still affiliated to some wider charitable field. While that field and its line of thinking isn't mine, I wouldn't hesitate to ask them for further pointers, and I'd expect them to come up with some if they can. The one in Kolkata is popular and situated on Sudder Street, you can hardly miss it if you're in the area.

pps Friends have worked for this group in their starting days and spoke highly of them: http://www.calcuttarescue.org.uk/ . This is a British support site, there's been something going on with the main site for a while, virus attack it seems. This doesn't directly fit or answer your question, however you could try to drop them an email with your proposal and if they have the time and resources to answer you (one never knows in India...) I'm sure they'd be willing to give you some further pointers.

Good luck with it once more.

I hope that i can find someone who needs some help and would like to make a link with the UK where we are also cricket mad.

I'd have absolutely no doubt about it yes, it's their #1 sport after all (derived from the British, needless to say, possibly matching some existing local sports & hence adding to the popularity. You'll realize polo was derived from a Central Asian (notably Afghan) horseman's sport (namely buzkashi), still practised and popular today. Anyway, whatever. I don't know anything of cricket btw, I just know that's how it worked with some other sports internationally. Especially ball games seem to strike something of a universal chord.)

Just search on, or again ask around on the ground if need be. I am very sure you will find just what you are asking for.

I am also going to India in October, and am a qualified coach and umpire. I shall be watching Australia and England tours until xmas but was also looking to do some coaching after xmas. I've e-mailed the BCCI, but no response. Maybe we could set something up? How long are you out there?
