My girlfriend and I are spending 3 weeks in India and would like to make a small-ish donation to a local charity that's doing good things.
Can anyone recommend one in one of the following locations: - Mumbai - Delhi - Jaipur - Chennai - Udaipur - Pushkar - Ranakpur - Agra - Kambalgarh - Chittogarh Obviously I'd like to see some proof of their work, it's hard to trust that your money is going to the right place and not just lining someone's pockets who doesn't need it as much as others. Thanks RP |

You can make a charitable donation at any government hospital. Believe me, they can work wonders with the cash!
They will probably want to make a song and dance about it; try to get the Principal to come and meet you, etc., but just stick the money in the box or give it to one of the medical staff.

It sounds like you want someplace you can walk into and hand some cash. I'm not sure I'd recommend that, just because it's harder to be certain the money will go where you want it to. There may be reputable organizations in those cities that take walk-in donations, but I don't know of any off-hand.
I can recommend Action Aid India as an organization that's doing lots of good work. I've personally seen some of the work they're doing with women's issues in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan and can vouch that they are a reputable and worthy organization. Probably the best way to support them is through their website, where you can also find out more about their work: http://actionaidindia.org/ I've also heard good things about Shakti Vahini. They're in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh and are much smaller than Action Aid. I'm sure they'd take walk-in donations although they're not in the cities you seem to be visiting. More on them here: http://www.shaktivahini.org/ |

Give it to us!!!! we are a charity based in Goa who needs a little funding, we help street and slum children, over the past year we've started a school and are now working on our first building where we can have children live in and use it as a drop in center (still trying to finalise everything at the moment, but hopefully shortly it should be finished). www.ChildrenWalkingTall.com

Some charites in India have achieved tax deductible status in (called 501C in the US). Look for something like that to ensure that they are legitimate.

Yeah, charities in India can apply for tax relief, but this wouldn't really prove that the charity is legitamate or not.... Surely you know India? Children Walking Tall is registered as a Charity in England via the charity commision (Charity No. 1106528 - Feel free to look us up) and also registered as a Trust in India, and to be honest most people look for the British stamp rather than the Indian one....

My recommendation is " Bharat Sevashram Sangha " . Decesion is always yours
Bharat Sevashram Sangha is a spiritual brotherhood of monks and selfless workers devoted to the service of humanity. It was founded in 1917 by the illustrious patriot saint Acharya Srimat Swami Pranavanandaji Maharaj. It is a philanthropic and charitable organization with non-sectarian , non-communal and non-political character and outlook. For more details about them :- http://www.angelfire.com/al/bharatse.../mainpage.html http://www.bssnj.org/index.htm http://www.geocities.com/bharatsevas...ugacharya.html The have centres in all major cities in India.

alabamagoa - Children Walking Tall is based in Goa, and it would be great if you'd like to do some fundraising for us... Where's your bar? The best way to contact us is via the email address on our website... I can get you a letter and things, and some photos to help it go well. Our office is in Mansfield (Nottinghamshire). Have a read here, also the newsletters give you an idea of what's been happening over the past year... www.ChildrenWalkingTall.com
