Weavers in Varanasi?
I am going to Varanasi next month and will be there for about two weeks in July.I really wanted to visit the silk weavers of Varanasi, all I know is they Live close to the Ganges in the older section of the city.I am interested in seeing how these ppl live and work-not the large factories but the ones working from home.Any information will be great.Thanks.

Ask how they use condoms in the process. Fascinating visit if you can manage it. We did it for a village in AP..

A long time ago, my first visit to india, hand-held by guides and drivers everywhere, I was taken to a shop in Kanchipuram where I spent a ridiculous amount of money on silk. Main thing is, though, that they had just a few looms behind the shop, and I had the guided tour.
I have no idea if similar setups exist there, but, if they do, I guess one could just ask.

Thanks people but I read somewhere weavers live way under poverty line in small crouched up huts and the middlemen end up making most of the profit. If the said is true,I intend starting a small NGO there, t give better medical and educational facilities to them and their children-like SEWA.I will have to do my reseach of course....its just an idea right now.

dear latetia
if u r serious about weavers life than go to Lohata/Kotwa [just arround 6 to 10 km from varanasi railway station ]where weaver just about to leave this profession cause they r not earning well to live and wear clothes on their own body, the place u r talking about i think that is madanpura near to ganga ghats, their r many many problems of weavers [ julaha/bunker] if u r think about them please go ahead, i cant explain more on this board but definatly i will encourage u time to time, and pray to god to gives u power to do what u think shailesh varanasi |

Thank you so much Sailesh, I am quite serious about it right now, trying to raise capital so I can actually make it into a possibility. Will keep this in mind. Thanks.

weavers
Thank you for offering. I am tying up with retailers so they can showcase the weavers creations. I am also getting new designs stitched and sourced so I have some work to give the weavers and work I am sure will bring money in.
