Varanasi versus Allahabad
I've got a few days in the Varanasi area - where I've been a couple of times and like - but thought about going to Allahabad instead where I've never been....
Whats does anybody think? Or any other ideas in that area? Thanks, Michael. |

The sangam (confluence of Yamuna, Ganges and the invisible Saraswati rivers) is a great spot to visit.
I liked Allahabad: fewer tourists by far than Varanasi. Great Hanuman Temple. |

varanasi and allahabad can never be compared. Varanasi is one of the dirtist and the holiest cities in the world. Varanasi is full of energy and allahabad is quite relaxing.

Allahabad is quite the governmental town as I remember. Kind of like a large city full of lawyers. I went in 1993, so quite a while ago. If you do go to Allahabad, I recommend 2-3 days at the most.

Though I only spent a day and one night in Allahabad on a drive back to Varanasi, I agree with New-South-Welshman's take. Imagine, somehow, that Allahabad and Varanasi are twins, or at least, brothers. Allahabad buttons the top button of it's starched shirt; Varanasi not only doesn't wear button down shirts, it doesn't own one, prefers to walk around naked.

What I remember about Allahabad, (i went there to see Prayag, the confluence spot) is that the cycle-rickshaws are even more colourful there than in Varanasi. Else I found A. rather boring. And I was there briefly after a Kumbh-Mela.
