Varanasi outing to Kushinagar?

Has anyone done a day trip to Kushinagar from Varanasi? I am thinking the way to do it would be to hire a car (and driver) for the day but can't work out just how far it is and whether we'd just do a lot of driving and then turn around and come back...
Any clues?

I think Varanasi and Kushinagar way too far away from each other for a day trip. Kushinagar is quite close to Gorakhpur and there are trains between Varanasi and Gorakhpur. I think the train travel will take more than 5-6 hours or even more. Hope this helps a bit.

Are there any other good places to go visit from Varanasi other than Sarnath you can suggest?

I have been in Varanasi four times before but never really as a tourist - just passing through, or working in Sarnath. I feel like I haven't seen much of the area at all.

Yeshhekathy, I have not been to Varanasi in ages. But I am sure someone will come along who knows more about the area. Also, try searching for Varanasi here as it might have been discussed before.

Yes, Gorakhpur alone is 215 kilometers from Varanasi which would be a full day trip by car. Kushinagar is another 50 km from Gorakhpur. Mughalsarai is near Varanasi, as you certainly know, what is worthwhile seeing there, no idea. Have you been on the other side of the Ganga? The Maharaja of Varanasi has his mansion there (upstream). One can tour his palace.
