Hi...
This is how it goes: Planning the 2nd trip to India and this time wanna stop to Varanasi before heading for the hills!Travelling with friends this time and its gonna be their first time to the subcontinent. Has anyone been to Varanasi during june-july to tell us how its like. Planning to be there mid june! Then want to head for Himachal and a bit of J&K! I reckon that the short way from Varanasi to HP is via Delhi...no? Any other reccomended route will be helpfull!! Thanks in advance!!! Iasis |

Hi
Here goes.... Good points about Varanasi in Monsoon: You can see the Ganges in full swing. The places around would be greener eg. Chunar fort, the temple inside the University and the University itself It would be cooler with moisture laten wind. Bad point Many areas would be slushy. This holds for any other place. Since I am not in Varanasi right now, other recent travellers may be able to help out better. |

It'll be high water, and the lanes will be a mire of mud and cow dung, but it'll also be magical and romantic. Go, and embrace the rain. it's nice and warm, after all.

The best thing about Varanasi for me is walking from ghat to ghat watching daily life unfold. Was there one August though and the river was way up and you can't do this... you can get down on to individual ghats but it's not quite the same.

So, train from varanasi to pathankot sounds a good option...do u know shimla how long does it takes? Probably that helps to reach J&K and more easily for Dharamsala...there are buses running every hour from Pathankot to Dharamsala and McLeodGanj as far as I know...Any link from Pathankot to Srinagar?
Thanks a lot! |

Varanasi in Monsoon
<Maree> is right. What he probably means is that you cannot walk along the ghats in a continous fashion but enter each ghat separately as the connecting walkway would be cutoff by water. At least in monsoon, you can make out the current which you cannot when the water is at a lower level.
<assi ghat> The city does not go under (I do not know about assi ghat )but the water level rises. |

Thanks once more for the replies...!
Anyone been to J&K recently? How are the things up there? Pressure for negotiations -again- was one of the main articles in kashmiritimes yesterday! Warm Regards |

iasis,
You have the following trains: 1. 3073 Himgiri Express, dep. Varanasi 14=48, arr. Chakki Bank 10=33 next day. This train runs on three days of the week. 2. 3151 Sealdah Jammu Express, dep. Varanasi 02=50, arr. Pathankot 07=05 next day. This train runs daily. Chakki Bank is a part of Pathankot. |

i wouldnt reccomend varanassi in the monsoon, its still varanassi. but you cant do all the attractions like walking down the ghats. and whn you take boat trips you can only go from shivala ghat to assi ghat. not up towards manikaran ghat, because the current is too strong.
also when we arrived here on the 22 of july the whole place was flooded because i had been raining for 5 days. it hasnt rained since, we've been pretty lucky. |
