Hi kidsan
I've not yet been to Varanasi, but would suggest that you check out the 9 Varanasi accommodation places listed under 'Hotel Listings' (top left hand of India Mike home page) - look under Uttar Pradesh. Happy travels Any other suggestions from IMers? |

Hi Kidsan,
I really enjoyed staying at Sahi Riverview Guesthouse on Assi Ghat but it's a fare way from the main ghats (which was why I liked it, much quieter and very relaxed). I haven't been there since 2004 but at the time it was good. Hope you find somewhere that suits. Padma |

Hi Kidsan. Could you be refering to The Shiva Ganges View Guest House on Mansarovar Ghat? I stayed there in '02 for Rs400, and I swear it was the cleanest accommodations I ever saw, and the meals (thalis) were sublime. The rate for the same room is now Rs1400, however that's not going to deter me from staying there again because of the cleanliness, the food and it's location on the ghats. Sorry to sound like an advertisement. Perhaps I feel so strongly about it because the previous time I was in Varanasi I stayed in a Rs90 hotel, which was OK, but it made for a fairly sharp contrast in quality. But the food is the real clincher. Norman

I like the Ganges View Hotel at Assi Ghat - it's not the same place as the Shiva Ganges View. I've heard good things about both, but I've only stayed at the Ganges View Hotel at Assi Ghat, so my comment is based on personal experience only of the place at Assi Ghat.

a few years ago three of us rented a room off a family in Varanassi, if you went down to the main ghat took a right for maybe 10 minutes and you come across a big concrete thing thats looks like a water tower, next to it is a three storey building with shiva and parvatti on the roof, it is owned by a family who live on the ground floor who are lovelly, we rented one of four basic rooms with a balcony on the ganges don't know if it is still there but worth a try.

I had an experience sort of like the last poster. I stayed in a little guesthouse down a backalleyway from assi ghat called I think the jpm. just a pastel blue colored family house with a few rooms upstairs. very nice people, nice clean room, and everything working well for about rs.80, unbelievable!
