Varanasi - camera shops?

Hi guys
Need help
I'm half way through my trip and someone in our group dropped my lowpro bag containing my Nikon D5100. It's buggered.
We're in Sanchi at the moment, next stop is Orchha and a few days later I have a choice - go on my own to Varanasi, as planned, or go with the group back to Delhi.
Are there any shops in Varanasi where I can buy this DSLR camera (or D3100)? If you know of any, please list the address for me.
I'm gutted. I don't want to go to Varanasi if I can't get ahold of a new camera there. God I'm ready for home!

Sorry SPUD
its your bag, lowe pro or no pro, dont give it to anyone else TO DROP . Your responsibility, your equipment

On the positive side, can you borrow someone else's camera, put in your card, take a few pics, then at least you might have a few memories.

Forget going backward , please look forward positively.

I hope you have decent insurance.

Enjoy your further travels. you have just experienced a minor blip.

Varanasi is no small place, by any means.

Surely you'll get a camera there. If precisely the one you're thinking of, I can't tell you.

If staying in the Old City, where the ghats and such are, you may well find something here, or I'd consider a short ride into the city center proper a little to the west, where you may find the better options for this sort of thing.

(Accommodation is somewhat divided between budget in the Old City, to higher-class in the city proper, so this might already determine where you'll find yourself staying.

Or at least that's how it used to be, some twenty years ago. Descriptions here don't lead me to think that's essentially changed, and in fact I think it greatly colors how many describe their experiences of "Varanasi." So whether they were staying in the area that suited them best.

The divide between accommodation classes of course will never be so sharp, but as a rule of thumb.)

I don't know if you could get that specific type of camera there.. But to name some places then, there is a camera store in Assi, close to Diamond hotel and IP Viijay mall. I got my little Nikon camera there, got a good price and the staff was friendly! Also a few camera stores close by IP mall, some of the stores have Nikon camera signs, but don't sell Nikon products though, hehe..

Hi guys
Thanks for helping
I've emailed a few shops without reply and my guide seems to think my best bet is to skip Varanasi & spend a few extra days in Delhi. I guess I'll find loads of camera shops there, may as well make the most of it
Thanks again

I would suggest to buy a simple point-and-shoot camera and continue with your journey to Varanasi (unless you are planning for another trip to varanasi in future).

Good camera bags, such as from Lowpro, provide enough cushion against serious damage. I suppose there is some minor camera malfunction, which can be rectified.

These cameras themselves are stress-tested for serious damage. Once I saw a Japanese lady dropping her DSLR (without bag) at National Museam's stairs in Delhi. There was some cosmetic damage but the camera was working perfectly

And, there is no harm in keeping a second camera (even if a point and shoot) as a standby for your future trips ...I myself carry three cameras

I think it is better to call them first before you finally cancel your trip.

In fact I called the first shop listed in my earlier post and they are saying they can deliver a D5100 in 24 hours (with bill and warranty) once you order one.

Hi guys
Little update.
Got to Delhi & found a shop called Dass Studio, They pretty much had everything so I bought a D3100 which is the cheaper Nikon version of my broken D5100. They didn't want to sell a body kit only, but after I explained that I came to them especially from Orchha canelling plans for Varanasi, they seemed happy to sell the body only. There was no point in getting the standard lens, as I already had it. The price was R27000 whch I'm happy with.

Photofreak I already had a 2nd camera brought over for holi (Panasonic FT10 = waterproof, dustproof etc) but I hated using it in Sanchi/Orchha whilst thinking over my options. I'd never go back to using a compact, although I guess they are totally perfect options for lots of people

Binman very kind of you to check up on prices, thank you, Okay I know I missed Varanasi - I'll spend twice as long there next year. Orchha will also be getting another visit from me, met several cool people there.

Thank you all for your thoughts on this, really appreciated.
Looking forward to posting some shots in the photo section in about a week.

Cheers
Spud

Thank God I didn't go (to Varanasi)... just checked my email. The flight was cancelled! Wonder if they'll refund me without having to chase it up?

I did, I'll know better next time. At least my flight home wasn't cancelled

Still waiting on Kingfisher getting back to me over the refund of that cancelled flight.

Sending my camera off to Nikon in the morning, as it's only 5-6 weeks old, I'm hoping they will sort out the problems with it.

Hi alokchicks The main problem is the shutter button won't fire, The lcd gives a warning 'Error: Please repress shutter button' Camera is back with shop now hopefully getting fixed (still under warranty) Would have sent it to Nikon, but that was just adding cost.

Cheers
