Ganges View, Taj on Ganges, or Palace on Ganges?
All are pretty high end, but beautiful hotels.

Maybe it's Hotel Temple on Ganges, south of Asi Ghat . . . restaurant on the ground floor, rooms on the top two, big open roof . . .

A lot has changed in six years. Like hotels have doubled in price.
There are hundreds of hotels in Varanasi, some are rip off faded glory hippy hotels, and some are not.
I looked at a lot, and they seemed to be full of westerners with filthy hair, and smelling of dope. Not that there's anything wrong with that, god knows I spent at least half my life like this, but it doesn't instill confidence in the hotel.
There are a group of top end hotels, and mostly you get what you pay for.
I chose a hotel which cost 250 rupees with air cooler and a decent guy ran it. It wasn't a foreign oriented hotel, but it was really nice, and no smelly tourists.
I 'spose it gets down to what you want. I personally don't like to stay in places with other foreigners, just as I don't want to rage all the time, getting drunk cheaply, and being a pain in the ass to the locals. If I want to experience western culture, I can stay at home.
I go to India to experience things I can't experience in my own country. That, for me is the point of travel.
I just don't understand wanting to hang with other people from "home".
I pay good money to get away from them. Maybe a dinner or something, but not a Posse of Aussies who wanna get pissed and see if they can crack onto a local .

I never said anything bad about foreigners. The long hair type anr mostly of the hippie type and that was what I mentioned.
I met a couple of decent Frenchmen during my visit to Varanasi in May and it was their view too.
