The Varanasi hospice
As girls aren't allowed onto the burning ghat, me and my friend were led upstairs to the first floor of a hospice directly behind it, to watch the cremations. i was appreciative of having somewhere to watch from, and having someone explain what was going on, but when the man there had finished he asked for a donation. i was going to give some anyway, but just the way that he asked, and wouldn't accept anything under Rs200 each, made me feel a bit resentful. anyone else have comments on the situation?
sorry, i sound really tightfisted. it wasn't the amount of money, it was just the way it was asked for ![]() |

Rs 10 would have been enough, Rs 20 a princely sum. Next time, just hand him the money and walk away.
I didn't go to Varanasi on my last trip, but on earlier visits there was a small balcony (free -- but for the company of every sari tout in the city) from which it was possible to watch the goings-on at the burning ghat. |
