If you want to stay near the Ganges.

Stay at Sahi Guest house.(River Facing)

Or Maruti Guest house is even much cheaper, and walking distance from there.

Can't help with the Sahi contact info, but, another offering is the Hotel Temple on Ganges, just 100m south of Asi Ghat. Not a cheap place, but a good one. And, they have a website/offer bookings online. Google them.

We wanted to stay at Hotel Surya, but it was booked. We did go to swim at the pool, which gave us a much appreciated break from the afternoon heat. Rs. 200 for pool use, and there were only a couple other people there. Rs. 40 to Catonement from that round-a-bout...

As to the pressure for silk shops, just tell them you don't purchase silk for ethical purposes. This is true, in our case, but it shut them up about it right away, and we weren't bothered again.
