Greetings to all, I will be going to Varanasi for six months at least with my partner beggining in March, strolling perhaps to Nepal and Rishikesh. We both work in theatre and dance and have some training in yoga. The reason for this trip is to deepen knowledge in Yoga on a "professional" level, to scent the atmosphere of the city and research it, and as well because being india so vast, not wanting to dissipate energies, we thought better to choose one city alone, varanasi won. Maybe some of you can inform me on places to learn yoga, the general life there from an insiders perspective, and expenses on renting houses and living there: we come from Portugal, not such a rich country so the least the better. For housing, yoga classes on an intensive basis and living hom much would that cost? Please share with us what you know on this particular place.
Thank you, Hugo |

Welcome to IM. Varnasi is a holy place and we hope you enjoy your stay in India.
Regarding yoga there are many teachers throughout India. One of the most famous would be the "Art of living". their website would be www.artofliving.org For info regarding their centers http://www.artofliving.org/centers/main.htm |

Hello,
I will be in Varanesi from March 17-19th. Perhaps we can meet?. It will be my first to India and will be coming from Goa after having spent two weeks there. After Varanesi I plan to practice Ashtanga yoga in Rishikesh with Louis Ellis (she has website and info). I have not looked into yoga places in Varanesi but in Rishikesh there are so many to choose from. You have to first choose a style then keep doing research. I am told that there are diverse experiences with regard to the many ashrams so I guess choosing wisely remains key. If you find anything interesting plse let me know, and I will do the same. |

Thank you for your answer, yes we can certainly meet. There seem to may opportunities in benares for yoga, but from my current research and net contact it must be highly screened. Even so, I prefer it to Rishikesh,or Mysore by the way, call it a hint. It seems to be not so much western centered with inflatable prices that imply classes for westerners alone mostly. I have seen the page of Louise Ellis and exchanged a email with, she seems a good ashtanga vyniasa teacher. Before going to Rishikesh personally I would prefer to try to learn in a context where the teaching would be more "traditional", threading before the Vyniasa and Yengar approach alone.
Additionally, I would be grateful if anyone here could inform me on the average cost of month rentals in Benares, on a budget, the info we can gather via net is contradictory and often delirious. |
