Kerala to Varanasi and ?

I'm at Amritapuri in Kerala currently. Going North in the beginning or middle of October to see more country. Was thinking of taking a train and going to Varanasi. I was thinking also of seeing the Himalayas, either by Darjiling or Rishikesh... Any ideas?

How much time do you have once you leave Kerala?

October is my favorite month in Varanasi. Heat and humidity have gone, skies are clear, night/mornings can be a little cool - Great time to go. Darjeeling might be a good option: you would have already seen some of the Ganges in Varanasi, and Rishikesh didn't do for me (at all) what Varanasi does, though being a yogi, you might find Rishikesh to your liking.

Ah, thanks for the replies, y'all! I plan on staying until Mid November, maybe end of first week in November. I was thinking of taking the train from Kerala and seeing some of India that way. Any recommendations on the type of car or?

Looking for ideas in Rishikesh, definitely want to see and if possible walk some himalayas. Varanasi I wanna soak in slowly as well. Good sites, food, and places to stay are on my list of what to do around there.

Take 2 A/C to Goa - Goa for a few days then train to Mumbai, then fast train to Delhi or Fly Mumbai > Delhi.

I've heard the same about the train car, thanks for the input! Thinking instead of going to Tiruvanalamay (sp?) hahahaha, for Ramana Maharshis Ashram and somewhere called SivaShakti as well. Need to relaxe after pancakarma and meditate for a bit. Then maybe after I can go Northward. Maybe Hampi as well, dunno the spelling there either.
