Apologies Paul, half asleep when reading forum.
I have just returned from Varanasi and stayed at the Ram Bhawan which belongs to the Kautilya society.Highly recommend you stay there as you are near the main ghats and in the middle of it all.Funnily enough ,I found it very quite at night so that suited me.
The staff there are great and nothing is to much trouble for them.
Have a look at my review on trip advisor.
Happy travels,Laney
p.s and its reasonable in price too

Another good option is Temple on the Ganges, at Assi Ghat !

If you found a hotel you like in the Cantonment then by all means go for it.

If you arrive at Varanasi by train at the Jct. station, simply take the footbridge over the station to the Cant side -- from there you can walk or take auto rickshaw as per your luggage. Whereas there can be some hassle at the station front side for passengers going towards city side or the ghats, on the Cantonment side it is serene.

All convenient shopping and dining is available along the main road running past the Cantonment. Each hotel has auto rickshaw wallahs who camp there for passengers, or you can walk to the main road to hail one.

The only down side to staying in the Cantonment is that attending morning activities along the ghats can be a production, as you must be careful to find a trustworthy driver. Similarly if you wish to attend classical concerts or other night time events along the ghats you may find it more convenient to stay in that area. Also be aware that it is easy to become lost in the alleys in the old city, and there is some risk there at night time (there is a history of some visitors going missing there each season). That being said, there is a main road that touches close to the main ghats, with auto drivers on station at all hours. If you keep your senses and use ordinary caution you can go back and forth from the Cantonment.
