Have you checked the hotels thread here?. There are quite a few recommendations for Varanasi.

Good on ya, there is heaps of stuff on there. my personal recommendation is Sri Venkateshwara Hotel. Mr Sharma, nice guy, and really clean.

He's benares born and bred, so knows all and everyone.
Mr Sharma, a true gentle man.
He also let me keep my filthy old backpack for free in his house while I waited for the bus all day. So nice.
He knows some really good places to eat as well.

Sri Venkateshwara Lodge

As 'palerider' suggests, I found the owner soft-spoken and helpful too. Though I couldn't get a room there.

Go for it! It's very near Dasashwamedh Ghat and Vishwanath temple lane and yet surprisingly secluded from the chaos at both places.

You'll need an ID proof though.

What are the rates like?
I usually stay at a very cheap, fairly clean and welcoming place the owners of which have a bad reputation locally. But it's nice to have an alternative.

I got a large room with air cooler, tv, fan, and SPOTLESS bathroom for 200 per night. But that was only coz I stayed a week, he said normally 250 for a few days.
It's really lovely, with a beautiful family shrine at the Entrance.

And about 100 metres or so from the ghats.
His friend at the ghats has the Rakshmi hotel. Very expensive, and he is a real gentleman as well. He took me to dinner on the roof, and introduced his wife to me, the woman he named the hotel after. He's the one who told me about the Venkateshwara.
The restaurant at the top of the Rakshmi is the Dolphin, highly recommended, for Indian and western food.

That's not bad for more than one person. They are big rooms as well, and it's Diwali.
