Well, the place I stayed at my second time was 60 rupies per night, single room without toilet. My first visit was dubblerom for 70, also without toilet. I nether of these hotels there is a "kitchen" were you can make your own food, but the restaurant is cheap. Maybe 20 or 30 rupies for fried rice.
the location.. it is hard to say, both hotels are vere near each other on a small road with a dutch bakery. I have been trying to find my notes from Varanasi, but som how I've lost it. So I cant give any directions. But if you want something cheap. try the back-alleys. There should be many places like the ones I stayed at, but it takes some time to find. I am sorry that I can not give you more information. Good luck! |

Two places to absolutely boycott in Varanasi IMHO are the two that are the most often being recommended: Ganges View and Palace on the Ganges.
I was recently in Varanasi and I stayed in a small, charming guesthouse located exactly between these two hotels. Whenever there was a powercut, these two hotels would run a big, noisy and smelly power generators, so loud that the whole Assi Ghat would rumble from the noise. It was happening any time, 4AM, 2PM, etc. They are a sort of an enviromental catastrophy for a part of the town that pretends to more peace and quietness than the main ghats. To think only about their own guests, while screwing all the other visitors as well as the locals from their area, that's beyond my understanding. |

Can anyone tell me if any of these hotels sell beer -- I love a cold one or three after a long day of sightseeing.

The Dolphin rooftop restaurant has cold brews. Good food and views too.
