Thanks so much for the suggestions Yatrayatra, we went to Zaika & had some AWESOME mallai kofta!! The best ever!
We went to Pehelwan - had kachoris with subji, jalebi, sweet lassi and namkeen lassi. sweet lassis are drizzled with their homemade rabri! Everything was soooooo yummy!! We couldn't go to Baba's Thandai, as it was closed. We did however try it in an adjacent shop. Very nice, but not what I had expected. I didn't want them to use ready-to-use thandai mix. Does Baba's Thandai make their own?? Don't think they added bhang in mine. We tried "Sindhi" restaurant in Hanuman Ghat, the mixed vegetable kadai was wonderful. The romali roti, however, was cold by the time he brought it to our table. Kadai was very good too. Paan wala's are quite the artists! There's one everywhere, but the one in Hanuman Ghat across the street from Ashok's Vegetarian Hotel makes gorgeous meta paans! We took tava rotis, several varieties of subjis, dahi..all neatly packed by Ashok's Vegetarian hotel for our night train journey. I love how the people of Varanasi makes use of clay pots. Keeps the dahi cool too! The dahi (yogurt) is the best in Benares! Actually any milk product is the best here! Best chai I've had was in Benares!! They're everywhere. Love those tiny clay cups - use & throw! There are chai wallas, who jump from boat to boat to serve hot, fresh, yummy chai. Enjoy it while watching the evening Ganga Aarthi! Went to this mithai shop (darn I can't remember the name right now!!) - one of the best in Varanasi - or so the guides, rickshaw wallas, have said...in Hanuman Ghat (again )...Lovely rossugullas - not too sweet - just perfect, soft like cotton balls!Never did go to Sri Ram Bhandaar Mithai - claims to be best mithai for their 3 colored burfees.
