Ghats: Is anybody in Varanasi at the moment? How will we find the river?

Hi everybody!

I'm going back to India for the third time next 10th of June and this time I'm going just for a month. I love Varanasi and we'd like to go back to visit it before going South. The problem is that it takes 30h by train (Mumbai-Varanasi) and if the Ganges is already up (covering the ghats) we will leave it for another time. We like sitting around on the ghats, and observe life in the Ganges. Is anybody in Varanasi at the moment? How will we find the river? If anybody can give me an answer it would be very helpful. Thank you very much!

In June life at the ghats in Varanasi is absolute normal. The river swell normally late July and August. I was there last August 2008 and was really a waste of time (have been many times in Varanasi) as the ghats were cut off by the water and was raining quite hardly everyday. I'll never go again to Varanasi during monsoon.

Thank you, that's why I was asking. In 2005 we were in Varanasi in the beginning of July and the river was up to the street, no ghats at all... we don't want to repeat the experience.

Absolutely its normal till mid July with mah exp. after that it goes crazy

why not take a trip to nepal its pretty near to varanasi

and its good place
