Dying in Varanasi, India

Suppose one was diagnosed with a terminal illness, and wanted to die in Varanasi. Are there rest houses/ accommodations set up for this? As a foreigner, would there be visa complications? I know that many Hindus wish to die in Varanasi, but just how practical is it in reality?

Hello Eastern,

I am sorry to hear bad health conditions & have no idea about its implications. All I want to say not to get too much upset in this regard. Dying at Varanasi all those beliefs how far ?? God only knows! Some section of people in Hinduism believes that & some dont.. Itz all goes on individual basis.

My sincere advice to the concern is to get a travel visa to India & start doing piligrimage as well can visit nice tourist spots with added to.

Anybody for that matter real praying makes matter - GOD WILL BE WITH EVERYBODY in ALL MEANS...

'Om Namah Shivaya ' may be chanted regularly!

He did say "supposing", and we hope that is the case, that this is a hypothetical enquiry.

Hi Nick - Thanks for correcting & giving an opportunity to edit the same, which was realised by me later!

Not to be farcical, but if you're going to die, how would an expired Visa matter?

Sorry, can't help you with your question about accomodation. Let's just hope it never comes to that, and you are safe and healthy in Varanasi.
Varanasi can perform miracles, you know? Visit the place in a positive frame of mind - who knows what'll happen.

Best Regards,
AFH

I hope this came out right, apologize if I offended you, Eastern Mind. Had absolutely no intention of doing so. Again, here's to your (continued) good health!

Now there's a conversation I'd like to see at the emigration check... "yes, but I expected to die, and there was this miracle...".

Old Family Story

My mother had a relative who, in his thirties, was told that he had only a matter of months, maybe a year, to live. This was confirmed by every every doctor that he saw. He was a man of property (I guess this story takes place in the 19th C, my mum having been born in 1916, not sure) and decided that he should, therefore, do exactly what he had always dreamt of doing: sellup, go to America, and be a cowboy.

He did it... and lived into his 90s

There are hospices for the dying near the ghats, but I reckon most would quickly kill even a healthy westerner. Hindu stuff (i.e. moksha, good rebirth, etc.) only applies to Hindus, anyway.

As someone said recently in a different thread: Tosh!

All are welcome to moksha and good rebirth. I authorize it, henceforth!

By the same reasoning, all are welcome to tear out victims' hearts and consecrate them to Huitzilopochtli to ensure a good harvest and victory in battle. Culture ain't a shopping mall, even if easy travel and the web makes it look so.

But you don't meet many Aztecs at Assi Ghat.

Yes, it is supposing. lol Gosh people jump to conclusions. I'm a healthy 56, do physical labour 3 to 4 hours every day, and I'm a non-smoking, non-drinking vegetarian. But there are 2 reasons I asked the question. One is that I am occasionally regarded in the Hindu community as someone to ask things of, and I have been asked this. Secondly, I just want to keep my own options open. If you did somehow get the "You've got so many weeks" from your doctor, you simply may not have time to plan a trip.

A few years ago I met a friend - an Anglican priest - who was shaking his head in disbelief. He'd just had a phone call from a man who wanted to arrange his mother's funeral service for the Friday of the following week. David asked where and when the lady had died. The reply was "Oh, she's not dead yet but the doctors don't expect her to survive the weekend." All very well to be organised but perhaps just a little premature Explaining to mother that you had gone to all the trouble of setting up her funeral just for her to go spoiling things might be quite tricky too!
