Hi..
Diwali is a festival celebrated all over India. This will fall on the 17th Oct, Saturday this year. On this day everyone will decorate their houses and stuff. Its one of the biggest festivals here. It marks the occasion of people celebrating the return of Lord Rama after 14 years in exile. Dev Diwali/Deepavali on the other hand (literally God Diwali) falls 15 days after the Diwali festival. I heard that its meant to mark the occasion of Gods themselves celebrating the return of Lord Rama. On this day, there is a lighting festival around all the ghats of Varanasi. This is not celebrated by the wider population. On this day there is a competition of sorts between all the ghats that which of them have the best decorated staircases. To get the best view you should hire a boat that will take you across all the ghats. Booking a boat is costly however on that day and you may need to have an advanced booking. I guess Diwali would be recommended for someone visiting the place for the first time. You can't miss the festive, upbeat atmosphere. |
