Hi guys,
This is my first post here, hope someone can help me.
I’m planning to travel around India during next month of November with my girlfriend; since the whole trip is going to last 3 weeks we decided to focus on the north part of India - even because of the risk of the monsoon tail in the South.
Yet, we have not decided the entire route but we heard something about “Dev Deepavali” festival, celebrated in Varanasi and described as follows: “At the occasion of Kartik Poornima the ghats of Varanasi come alive with thousands of diyas (earthen lamps) lit together. This spectacular event famous as the Dev-Deepawali is celebrated on the 15th day after Diwali, as a tribute to river Ganga by the people of Varanasi”. It would sound interesting, would not it?
Now we are facing this question? When does the 15th day after Diwali occur? We found on the web this day should occur on the 5th of November 2006, but the evidences are not so clear and there are so many different sources of information each giving different translation of the Hindu calendar that we are not sure about it. Moreover, if the festival is on November 5th 2006 which is, up to you, the best choice? arriving in Varanasi the 3rd and leaving the 5th, or arriving the 4th and leaving the 6th?
I thank you all in advance and I congratulate you for all the interesting items of this wonderful site. whishing one day I can contribute!
Take care
Max

I would also suggest spending more than several days in Varanasi. I returned just three weeks ago from five months in Varanasi. It is a fascinating city. One of the great cities in India to be for a major festival . . . Have a Great Trip. Scott

Varanasi is, in fact, one of the oldest continuously lived in cities on earth. Jerusalem and Beijing being other oldies.

November 10th or 11th 2011 should be Dev Diwali. It is normally 15 days after Diwali.
