dance classes in Varanasi?
I'd really love to take some dance classes while I'm in Varanasi. I've never done any Indian traditional dance, but I'm interested in trying out one or more of the various types. I'm sure I can do this in Varanasi...does anyone have any leads or contacts in this area?
I'd love also to take ballet or contemporary dance, though I'm not sure if I'll find a class...I'm thinking it's less likely than finding Indian dance classes, but I may be wrong. Does anyone know anything about this? Thanks so much! |

Try a few things . . . BHU (Benares Hindu University), in the south end of the city . . . any music-related shop/where music teachers can be found (Music Melody House, in the Asi area, where I found my bansuri teacher, will most likely lead you in a good direction) . . . The Ganges View Hotel, at Asi Ghat, puts on cultural programs during the season - music/voice/dance/etc, and may have some leads . . . there is in early April a five-day music/dance/singing festival held at the Sankat Mochan Temple; Mahantji, the priest of that temple, may have some information . . . and I believe you're right, finding ballet will probably be more difficult than traditional Indian dance.
