Well, in IMO, if you are religious Hindu probably it woud be Varanasi unless Kumbh Mela is in Haridwar. Since it is not at the time I would opt for Varanasi. But then, I'am not a Hindu.

Yes, for an Indian person Haridwar is probably more attractive. You are in the foothills of the Himalayas, the Ganga is relatively clean there with a strong current, there is more serenity, quiet and calmness, and hill-stations are within easy reach. Plus it is a holy place as well.
Varanasi is very crowded and polluted. It is very attractive to foreigners due to the colorfulness and the hustle-bustle in the narrow alleys, which may not attract you as much. If you wanted you could get them both by taking the Nilachal Express from Bhubaneshwar to Varanasi, stay there a night and then continue with the Doon Express to Haridwar. Good luck. |

Haridwar is better place than Varanasi as there is a heavy electricity problem and the dirtyness in the varanasi.

It depends on what you want, I guess. I find Varanasi more interesting. Haridwar is wonderful, but Varanasi is an adventure.

Haridwar or varanasi these 2 places gets its importance because of ganges. Varanasi is more colourfull, its the oldest living city in the world and it has many more stories which makes it more attractive then haridwar. Haridwar is more of a bathing ghat.

Haridwar or Varnasi
Comparing Haridwar and Varnasi - why? Every one is unique.
What are the best avilable in Haridwar is avilable in Varanasi also. Varnasi - Kasi Viswanathar (One of the 12 Jyothirlingams in India), Annapoorni, Kasi Visalakshi, Sankatmotcha Ganapathy, Saranath (Budha temples), Jantar Mandir, Ram Nagar Fort, Bharat Mata Temple, Durga Temple, New Viswanathar Temple, Tulsi Manas Temple, Mahadev Temple, various ghats (Bathing Places), are the wonders of Varnasi. Dirtiness: The human body itself is a dirty material. If you see the power of supreme power, nothing could stand before it. In Haridwar lots of Ashrams are available for Yoga, Dhyanam, and worshiping purposes. Ganga Arti, in Haridwar, Chandi Devi and Manasa Devi Temples are the excellent places to be seen. Rishikesh, Very near to Haridwar. The footsteps to Himalayas. The strong current of Ganga, beautiful mountains in Haridwar and the wonderful medicinal air and above all the peace of mind, one get while in Rishikesh are the blessed ones. Both places are very import to hindus. |
