Best hotels & restaurants in Varanasi?

Hey all,

I'm looking for the best hotels and restaurants in Varanasi that someone could recommend out of experience. I know it is easy to get sick in Varanasi so I'm trying to find the best options to eat & sleep..

thanks

Vivek

Stayed at the Rashmi guest house, which is clean. Rooms are small but the great location make up for it. The rooftop restaurant serves beer and the food is good, and you can see into the kitchen.
Also ate in the Keshari restaurant nearby and it was excellent.

I am one who never likes to look into a kitchen. Look into the Ganges View Hotel, at Asi Ghat. I live in the Asi area when I'm in Varanasi and really like - as a change from Indian food sometimes, the Middle Eastern Thali at the Haifa Hotel and Restaurant. The hotel is well run and clean, but a little too modern for my tastes. My last trip, six months in '06, I stayed across the street from the Haifa, at the Tiwari Lodge. Wonderful experience, and it is the best experience for me that makes the best hotel, so, the Tiwari is MY best hotel in Varanasi. The owners are great, and the guests are very eclectic, mostly long-time stayers like me. Also, look up the Kerala Cafe for great dosa.

pibikay - I don't know for sure if the Middle Eastern Thali is STRICTLY veg, but as for the plate, there is no meat on it. It's very good. Also try the Kerala Cafe. Really good dosa. And, if you can find it, in the Asi area, just past the Asi post office and the cinemas, there is a little thali place near the road to Lanka. Right side of the road, red plastic chairs, white plastic tables for the outside dining. REEEEEEEALLy good thali.
