Arriving Mughal Sarai 1AM - advisable?
Gurus,
We plan to take the Rajdhani from Howrah to Mughal Sarai, with the train arriving at Mughal Sarai at 1AM. We are concerned we'll be stranded at the station without any way of getting suitable accommodation, although getting there on the fast Rajdhani appeals. Is it advisable to get the MS early in the morning? Any reasonably priced/budget hotels we can get to that late? Thanks |

No, no need to.
The Mughal Sarai-Allahabad coridoor would be an area with an awful reputation if it wasn't so close to Bihar. There are perfectly timed overnight trains from Howrah to Varanasi or Mughal Sarai.

Steven, thanks for the reply.
Do you mean we shouldn't take the Rajdhani at that time? I had thought of taking the Doon express earlier, but that takes nearly twice the time of the Rajdhani. Any other fast trains you could recommend? |

I don't know about the details to this question, but on a handy night train you'll typically be asleep, so the speed becomes less of an issue. Wake up & find yourself ready to go in yet another city

Eureka, I've only just in the last 10 minutes booked the train you want. the HWH-JU EXP (howrah to what express? Jullundur? Jaipur? Jodhpur?) train # 2307 leaves Howrah at 11:30 PM and arrives at Mughal Sarai at 9:30 AM. Perfectly sensible hour to be arriving in Varanasi. I'm not sure it's the fastest train, but unless it's imperative you be in Varanasi ASAP I see no reason you'd want to pick the absolute fastest if it arrives at an inconvenient time, since you'd lose precious hours waiting it out at the station or crashing in a hotel.

JU = Jodhpur (if reservations don't appear to be available on that train, try adding an 'A' to the train number, then you'll be able to book in the portion of the train that goes to Bikaner)
Other trains.... Train 2321, Howrah 22.00, Mughal Sarai 08.20 Train 2333, Howrah 20.00, Varanasi Jn 09.45 |
