Weather in Almora

Hi,

I am traveling to Almora, Munsiyari and Chaukori for my honeymoon. I will reach Almora on the 11th of Feb, 2008. Could anyone please tell me what to expect in terms of the weather in these places?
I am from Kerala and the temperature here never crosses below 20 degrees. So it would be great if anyone could help me, so that I can get prepared.

This year it has been very cold so far. Even in the last week or so the weather has been very hard.

If you are leaving in three days, and upto Munsiyari, carry heavy woolens, specially after Kerala it is likely to be very cold.

PS Look up recent threads in the Uttarakhand forum, I remember somebody posting in the last 24 hrs(shyamal?) that on a recent trip weather was very bad.

Munsiyari should be really cold at this time.....but the clear beauty of the himalayan ranges will be a treat.

I just love Indiamike. I had googled for all this information for hours but got nothing. Then when all hope was lost, i just posted this question in Indiamike and within minutes i get responses. What will i do without Indiamike.. you guys are simply great.

I will get some heavy woolens, hope it would be sufficient.

thulma is a traditional woollen blanket. it is made by bhotia women, but it is slightly rough, as it is made out of goat's wool directly. you can get it gandhi ashram in almora, or in the munsyari market. i suggest that you can cover it with abed cover to enjoy its warmth and be protected from its roughness. it is THE best thing to stay warm in the hills.

dmitri, I doubt whether you have already started from your place or not. I stayed 4th,5th Feb in Munsyari/Chaukori. With an initial heavy rain and snowfall, weather became clear afterwards. Munsyari was the coldest. Carry hand gloves, at least two/three layers of woolens for the nights. Munsyari has power supply and low voltage problem. Room heaters will not work. Chaukori is better from that point of view. Weather in hilly area is highly unpredictable, still better chance to enjoy the peaks and snows. If you have not started please do a PM to me. Wish you all the best. Nothing to worry and enjoy.

Today's temp in Nainital is a high of 8 C and a low of -2 C.
So you can have some idea of what to expect.
All across north-west India, this winter has been unusually harsh.
The snow in Kashmir has been heaviest in the last 10 years.
In Jammu hills, continuous snowfall all of last week has triggered avalances and caused loss of life.
But that was last week. The skies are now clear.
Have a nice holiday.
