Livin and Paleface, wonderful and informative posts. Thanks for helping people like me who are planning to visit uttarkashi.
I will be traveling with my wife and our 5 year old sometime from the 20th of oct onwards. Is it a good idea going from the mussorie chamba road towards uttarkashi (I was thinking of breaking our journey at dhanaulti or chamba overnight). I would prefer going on this route than via rishikesh, but since I am traveling with five year old, I rather take the safer and less tiresome route. If you advise taking the rishikesh route, is there a calm and serene place above rishikesh (away from tourists and towns) where we could stop overnight.
Finally do you recommend a taxi driver, who could take us to uttarkashi via either of these routes?
Thanks in advance

is this travel originating in Delhi, i.e. train/car? to Rishi or what? Anyways Oct. 20th is quiet on the roads so journey time is quicker, and safer etc enjoy the ride sort of thing..

There is a shorter and quicker route to uttarkashi from Suwakholi. You will have to come back towards Mussoorie from Dhanaulti to take this route.

Monal is a favourite as it is clean and neat, Dipender is very particular about keeping not only Monal clean but also the areas surrounding the guest house clean, whih speaks volumes for his sincereity to cleanliness in an area that is notorious for filthy rooms and filthier toilets. Not to mention dirty bed clothes. Kuflon Basics is a great place to relax ... they have recently joined the grid and now have electricity, but that does not take away the charm of the place which is still very rustic and beautiful. Everest Hotel is in the town and right by the road, not ideal for people looking for a relaxing time ... ok for overnight yatris. Maj. Jamnal is one of the best informed people around and a pleasure to have as company on a long lazy evening.
Shikhar is too corporate ... they don;t have fixed tariffs for walk in guests depends upon the time of the year, occupancy of the resort and the mood of the manager. Best to go there if you have a booking from the delhi office end. The location is nice by the river but it is not a place for a casual drop in visitor on a budget.
We have had exceptional rains this year, starting from March till the end of Spetember. For four month from May to august it was overcast sky all the time with hardly any clear days. Despite all that Uttarkashi did well, though the same can't be said about the road to Uttarkashi, which took a serious beating due to the excessive rain.
Moreover, since the formation of the lake at tehri, the travel time from rishikesh has increased considerably and the road is not as easy on the stomach as it used to be. We are hoping that the Dehradun- Chinyalisaur-Uttarkashi road will be commissioned soon so we will not have to endure the stomach churning drive from Rishikesh any more.
Despite the bad road and the less than easy drive, Uttarkashi is a place worth the time and effort spent on coming here. A word of advice, don;t come here for a short stay, you should plan to spend atleast a week if you want to come this far.
The Gangotri road is a disaster, it is constantly blocked so don;t plan on gettign there too soon and if you really are not into visiting the pilgrom areas my advice is give it a miss till they fix up the road which may be another few years given the pace at which work gets done here.
If you need any more information please let me know, I will be happy to oblige.
By the way , we are not all that out of beyond any more. Uttarkashi has very good internet services. Several internet cafes working on broadband. One is on Court Road very near the District Court, next to the Panchayat Bhawan he charges Rs 40/- per hour, one on the Bhatwari Road ( the most popular with the foreigners) called Choice Computer, charges are higher than all others Re 1/- per minute or Rs 60/- Per hour. We are better off than Delhi and all other cities where water and electricity is concerned. We hardly ever have water or electric cuts. If they do happen it is only due to some major problem.
There is one ATM there of SBI that is functional most of the time (unless some idiot tries to break into it, like happened a month back when all of us were in a fix as the ATM was down for nearly two weeks.) There is anotehr one coming up from PNB, should be functional by the end of the month if not earlier as per Mr. Rawat the Manager of PNB. You should get your money out in the afternoon around 1.00 when the ATM is most likely to have cash as it is replaced around 12.00 noon.
Hi LiHimalayas,
Its really a nice bit of information that you have shared here. I was just wondering if Aug(10-12) will be a suitable time to visit, mainly due to rains and landslide. I really need to take some time off from Delhi (not been in mountains since 2 years now & it is tragic!). I would like to visit NIM and have heard about Monal Guest House (MGH) and it seems that the owner is a NIM graduate, so I was wondering if my stay at MGH would cater to both.

Guys if you are planning to visit uttarkashi, hold on.
Bad news, there had been massive floods in Asi ganga leading to collapse of roads, houses and bridjes.
Many are feared to be swept away.

For more check out this thread where I have posted more details.

No Need to go to Chamba if you are in Mussorrie, why prolong the route when there is a shorter and better route??? Don;t understand the logic behind this route!!

The Chamba Suwakholi Uttarkashi route would take about 8 hours from Dehradun where as the Suwakholi, Thatyur, Bhavan, Nagun road that I have suggested will take about 5 and a half hours.

You could take a bus direcetly from Delhi to Dehradun. There are several including Volvo buses.
Suggest you postpone your travel plan here for a few months. Ther conditions here are not conducive to tourism at the moment, unless you want to help out in the area.

Hey "LivinginHimalayas"
Its great to hear that you have settled down in Uttarakashi.
Am planning to visit the same and areas around in January. I think there is no snowfall before uttarakshi. I will be coming from Chaandigarh via Paunthi route.
Can you please suggest me any home stay , or any cheap stay in some hut in a village near to uttarakashi?
Or such places available and open in Jan?

Hii LinH

A belated thank you... Yeah I was not able to go to Uttarkashi at that time, went to Ukhimath instead in Sep and it was real heartbreak to see the beautiful Valley in such dismay after two cloud bursts. Could not imagine what would have been the scenario in Uttarkashi.
I will keep in mind the alternate route suggested by you on my next travel to Uttarkashi.

Regards
Riyan

Hello Everyone, Thanks to LivingInHimalayas and everyone else with the amazing information that is available here. I am looking to travel to India to meet with family this December 2013. However, I would like to spend about 3 weeks in solitude doing meditation and yoga possibly between November 29th or so to December 18th or 20th. I have travelled to Rishikesh and the Chardham before so have a little bit of idea about the place though not a whole lot. For all the incredible people living in those spiritually powerful places can you please help me choose a good place to live and make the most out of my stay. I am not very constrained by budget but something not very expensive would be good too. I would like to

1. Meditate by myself for hours together if possible.
2. Someone to help me with Asanas and Pranayama in the morning would be wonderful. I am not an expert in Asanas and Pranayama but would like to practice them so I can sit longer.
3. Getting basic hygienic food once or sometimes twice a day should not a problem.
4. It would be nice to have clean surroundings with clean toilet/bathroom.
5. If the place has a facility to wash or get my clothes washed then that would be ideal too.
6. I do like to take some walks/treks when taking a break from meditation and if the place is in the lap of the nature then that would be great too.

Please suggest any place that all of you amazing people can think of. Also, there was a mention of Swami Shivananda Ashram in Ganeshpur and Tapovan Ashram. I could not find any links. How do I contact those two ashrams and do I need to make a reservation there? If you have a website link then can you please share it with me?

Also a couple of questions as I would be visiting during off season. How is the weather in Uttarkashi during the month of December? Is the place very crowded during the month of December?

Any and all help from the experts living in those areas would help me a lot and I would be very thankful and appreciative of the same.

Regards,
Shiva prasad.
