Heavy rains continue to lash Uttaranchal
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NDTV Correspondent

Monday, September 19, 2005 (Dehra Dun):

Heavy rains continue to lash the lower areas of Uttaranchal for the third consecutive day today, and it also snowed in some parts.

The lower reaches and plain areas of the state were also hit by heavy rains which triggered landslides blocking the Chardham yatra route at several places.

State administration has pressed in bulldozers to clear the debris caused by landslides in the Udham Singh Nagar district. One person died in Nainital district and another in Almora in the incident.

Snowfall was also reported from the higher reaches of Nanda Devi and nearby mountains in Chamoli district heralding cold conditions in the area.

Meteorological department director Anand Sharma said rains may continue in the state till tomorrow.

There has been snowfall in higher reaches of Joshimath, this is a great news as it seems we can expect good snowfall this season after heavy rains.
If you find my posts confrontationist, please bear, I am an old frustrated guy who has nothing better to do than sit on rocking chair and curse the world whole day

Really? Is it so? It's snowing too apart from heavy rainfalls?
Great news indeed!

The weather this morning has improved a bit though we can't say yet if the rains will stop. There have been widespread landslides all over uttarakhand.I am not very sure about garhwal...the last I knew the route between Srinagar and Rudraprayag was closed on Saturday but reopened yesterday.Uttarkashi was also cut off.In Kumaon the roads to Almora,Bhimtal and Pithoragarh are all damaged. There has been a major loss of life and property in Almora district where there was a cloud burst.Schools are closed till Tuesday and the state is on a red alert for more incidents of landslips.

Called my friend who is stuck in the same place (80kms from Dehradun) for Rupin pass trek for the last three days. The news is rain has stopped this morning and the sky is very clear. But waiting for JCB to come and clear the roadblock. Looks like the trek is cancelled. I wonder how many people had to cancel there treks and comeback. What an dissappointment.

Hundreds of lives have been lost and peoples land washed off. Crops have been destroyed. Every single family is affected in some way in hills, I think getting disappointed by cancellation of trek should be looked in perspective.
