Hello,

We are planning a trip to uttarkand need information about a trek to Tungnadh, please find below is our initial plan.

Dec 25th: we are reaching to rishikesh in the morning, spending whole day in rishikesh.

Dec 26th: Catch a bus/share taxi to chopta
Dec 27th: Whole day trek to tungnadh temple, if possible to head up to chandrashila and return back to chopta
Dec 28th: Catch a bus/share taxi to dehradun.

I need the following information

Rishikesh to Tungnadh:
  • How about the bus frequency, will there be a bus in the evening late night?
  • How about the accommodation in chopta.
  • What is the climate situation by end of December?

Bus/ Jeep to Rudraprayag. only early morning from Rishikesh. Maybe, you can get one by 10-11 AM if lucky, but then high chances of not getting further transport to Ukhimath/ Chopta.

Rudraprayag to Ukhimath too dries up late afternoon outside of yatra season. Jeeps are always ready, but if they are not full, they won't leave for the day.

Ukhimath to Chopta - you'll almost surely have to take full jeep any time of the day. Cost 6-800 rs. If lucky, you can get fellow hikers to share, but no public transport as such.

Limited accommodation in Chopta should be available unless heavy snow is accumulated and no tourists are expected. This usually doesn't happen before second week of Jan. Confirm at Ukhimath before leaving.

It'd be cold. Can expect sub-zero temps from late evenings. Snowfall is on luck, but definitely possible. One fine day it could be sunny and dry. Overnight, there could be a feet of snow.
Learning to be silent.

Tungnadh Trek help required

Hi bharal,

Thank you very much for your reply.

How about the bus/share taxi frequency from haridwar? we are planning to get down in Haridwar, which location we can catch a bus/jeep to Rudraprayog?

How about the travel frequency from Rudraprayag to Ukhimat?

I spoke to a guy whoose hotel name is ‘nandadevi’ who is charging 1500/- per night at chopta.

Also, from chopta-tunghnadh-chandrashila-chopta shall we get sleeping bags everything over there?

There are a handful buses from Haridwar too, early morning. I'm not sure of timings. Outside of yatra season, it's better to go to Rishikesh, unless you plan full taxi, or leaving very early in morning i.e. 5-6 AM.

Rudraprayag to Ukhimath is frequent in first half of the day. As said before, it dries up in afternoon. One can always get a jeep, even late evening if there are good number of passengers to share.

In winter, all facilities depends on weather and number of tourists arriving. This winter seems colder than usual so far. But there's no forecast of heavy snow in next few days. So, I would expect Chopta to be open till new year at-least. But, better to ask your hotel guy and arrange it beforehand.
