Trip to Kedarnath
We are planning a visit to Kedarnath early October. Travelling with my parents, wife and a 3.5 year old kid. The plan is to self drive to Rishikesh and then hire a 6 / 7 seater vehicle (with driver) for taking us and back from Gaurikund. Iternary planned is following
Oct 1st - Noida to Rishikesh to Srinagar Oct 2nd - Srinagar to Gaurikund, trek/ponies/pittu to Kedarnath Oct 3rd - Kedarnath to Gaurikund to Rudraprayag Oct 4th - Rudraprayag to Rishikesh to Noida Need advise from the senior boarders on following 1. What's the latest we can start from Gaurikund towards Kedarnath (we plan to hire ponies & pittu for the kid), Srinagar halt i had planned & booked as i was thinking it would make it easier to reach also does not leave us too far from Gaurikund (but now I am getting doubts?) 2. Any weight limitations on the ponies (one of my parent is 75 kg) 3. Any suggestions or pointers (any other thread which talks about in detail) on essentials to carry/plan for as I get an impression from the posts here that it may still be raining and real cold ... 4. Any suggestions on optimizing the itinerary to include some place around Rudryaprayag which we can visit while on way back on day 3 / 4 (requiring minor detours) Look forward to inputs / suggestions .. |

There are several threads dealing with Kedarnath, scroll down to the end of the page and you will see a section similar threads right at the bottom of the page. You can find links to similar threads there.
The search function of IM also is pretty helpful in searching information.

Thanks Vikram, I am doing well, though to confess a little nervous since we decided to make the trip
My confusion did arise because most of the posts I went through here suggest starting from Gaurikund very early and preferably staying there overnite. Your reply is very reassuring .. |

mb7419, welcome to IM. as livinhimalaya said go thru similar threads, your all apprehensions will vanish. from srinagar gaurikund is 110 km and it will take 5 hrs with breaks. so you will start your trek around 12.00. a normal person takes 5-6 hrs to trek 14km upto kedarnath.. also as vikram said, be prepared for rains and also for cold at kedarnath

The reason why knowledgeable people suggest starting early - so that you do the major part of your trek before the sun gets too hot. Up here in the mountains, past midday, the sun can beat down on you mercilessly and it gets too hot. Another reason for starting the early trek is to be able to catch the morning darshan. The temple closes at 2.00 or 2.30 (sorry forgetting the exact time someone will come along and put it in soon).
If you start trekking past midday then be prepared to get more exhausted than if you start trek early. I suggest you try and stop somewhere closer to gauri kund than you are planning right now. Srinagar is atleast 4 hour drive from Gauri kund and then you need time to organize your ponies/dandi/kandi before you start your trek up. |

If you star past mid day and decide to do it on foot, sensible thing would be to break at GMVN, Rambara.

The proper order as per the tradition is Rishikesh - Kedarnath - Badrinath - Rishikesh.
You may search for ShubhYatra travels on this forum. It's a recommended travel agency. |

hi natrajan how are you..
on the way to kedarnath you can visit chopta(mini switzerland of uttarakhand),, and tungnath temple at chopta.. and on the way to badrinath you can see auli near joshimath. and also you can enjoy camping and rafting at shivpuri its only 30km from rishikesh it depends how much time you have in extra 2-3 days you can visit any of these places.. chopta you can.have one night stay--- auli is possible on the way only 4hrs you need ... i think it will be more better option that you should go like.. 1st day--rishikesh to gaurikund 2nd day darshan at kedarnath come back night stay at chopta--- (3rd day) visit chopta in afternoon moov for joshimath(night stay at joshimath)--- (4th day)go to badrinath (darshan at temple visit mana and come back to joshimath night stay--- (5th day)--joshimath--auli-- back to shivpuri--- night capm at shivpuri-- (6th day)next day rafting to rishikesh(if you like) and hotels you can find easily because this time no rush is there.. and for taxi you can call 09758231045(nanda taxi service) guy name is nanda(nand kishore) |
