travel to uttranchal

hey piyush,
thnx. this was just very close to wht we came up as an conclusion with. planning to take abus to nainital from delhi as the train departs in the night and we would reach delhi probably in the morn.
3 days at nainital, corbett (1 night if possible or extend one night at ranikhet) proceed to ranikhet (1 night), kausani (2 nights at kausani). backto delhi.

we are opting not to take a complete 7 day vehicle on hire as we are being v keen to wind up in the minimum budget we can. so would only take the source wherever necessary also keeping open to the local transport.

i also found out that the kmvn organises daily tours (local sight-seeing, to kausani 2days n to ranikhet for 1 day) which sounded pretty cheap. Are they reliable?

piyush i m extremely sorry to bother u but since tht we are very new to travelling on our own i would not want to end up with a misery. So with u expertise around, i can pack my tour with the best of results.
thnx

You are planning to take the bus in the morning or night?Delhi to Nainital by bus is 9hrs journey.Try to take a AC bus, otherwise it becomes very cold in night.KMVN tours are reliable but I have never tried them.I am very frequent traveller in this route, this year itself I went 5 times to this region.
Nainital-->Corbett-->Ranikhet-->kausani-->Almora--->Delhi
If you have time visit Jageshwar also, its nearlly 35km from Almora

there is a link in IM
http://www.indiamike.com/india/uttar...9632/new-post/

..Local transport is good in that part of region but the comfort level is low.

Hello to all of you. I am a new member and considered this thread to be more appropriate for my convenience. I had planned for a Kumaon tour with my family (Self , Wife and our son of 6yrs) in the first week of Nov. We will reach Kathgodam by Ranikhet Exp on 3rd Nov and we will have a car throughout the tour till we again come back to Kathgodam on 10th Nov. Planned journey detail are:
1st Day- Kathgodam - Peora- Mukteshwar. night stay at Peora.
2nd Day- Peora-Almora-Jageswar-Binsar. Night stay at KMVN Binsar.
3rd Day- Binsar- Chaukori. Night stay at KMVN Chaukori.
4th Day- Chaukori-Bageshwar-Baijnath-Kausani. Night stay at Kausani.
5th Day- Kausani-Gwaldam-Kausani. Night stay at Kausani.
6th Day- Kausani-Ranikhet-Nainital. Night stay at Nainital.
7th Day- Nainital Local tour.
8th Day- Nainital-Bhimtal-Naukuchiatal-Kathgodam.
I am extremely thankful to Capt Mahajan, Piyush, Dilwalla, Jotyrmoy, Pilgrim and others for their comments which helped me to plan my tour as per above. All the hotels have been booked and necessary tickets have been done.
I wish to know followings from you.
1. We would like to have sunset from zero point at Binsar on 2nd Day. Will it be feasible to reach Binsar in the afternoon if we start from Peora at 0900Hrs and then to Almora and Jageswar and finally to Binsar.
2. From Binsar to Chaukori, which route should we follow, through Kandri Chinna/ Raiagar or through Bageswar.
3. How cold the uttaranchal will be at that time? What is the chance to enjoy peaks of Nandadevi, Trishul and Panchchulli? Please suggest anything you feel to be helpful for me.
Thanks.
Shyamal

Kathgodam-->Peora-->Mukteshwar
No need to go to Peora if you are going to Mukteshar. From Kathgodam you need to go by Bhimtal,Bhowali,Gagar,MallaRam garh,Bhatelia then Mukteshwar. From Mukteshwar you can proceed to Peora.....Dilliwala what your thoughts are???Peora to Almora would take close to 2hrs via the Kwarab bridge. Almora to Binsar(30km,via paparsali,Kapadhkhan) 1 hr and 20 minutes,Almora to Jageshwar(35km,via Badechina,Panuwanaula,Artola) 2hr.If you are going to Binsar from Almora visit Garar temple. This temple is on the route to Dhaulchina(there is road 700m before the Binsar bend, going straight to Dhaulchina).
Jageshwar to Binsar....Come back to Barechina, take the road which goes Shehraghat. From Dhaulchina ,Binsar 7-10kms.I dont know whether there is a motorable road to Binsar.
Mornings and nights are cold in start of November,if the weather is clear, the views will be magnificent.

Thanks Piyush for a quick reply. I booked hotel(Resort Sequester) at Peora for the 1st Day. What I am thinking is that after getting down at Kathgodam early morning I will go straight to Peora via Bhimtal, Bhowali, Khairna and Kwarab bridge. Probably it may take 3 hrs. If I can start at 0700 hrs from Kathgodam I will reach Peora at around 1000hrs. After getting fresh and taking lunch we will go to Mukteshwar. The hotel person is saying it will take 40 mts to reach Mukteshwar from Peora. We will visit Mukteshwar and come bck to Peora in the afternoon for night stay. The alternate road which you mentioned to reach Mukteshwar via Gagar,Ramgarh and Bhatala is also seems to be attractive but in that case I will be able to reach Peora in the afternoon and probably will not get time to fresh after nearly 24 hrs of train journey (Rajasthan to Delhi, Delhi to Kathgodam).
I wish to reach Binsar in the afternoon on 2nd day. If I wish to visit Jageswar, I have to go Almora from Peora and then to Jageswar. From Jageswar again I have to come back to Almora for Binsar(?!). If I am right then probably I will not be able to reach Binsar in the afternoon to see the sunset from zero point.
Whether the road you have suggested from Jageswar to Binsar via Bare China/Paleo Bend(Map shows) is convenient and operational? How much time will it save?
I will definitely see the temples as suggested by you.

Nope.

There is a road from Jageshwar which meets the road from Almora to Binsar (and beyond) just a few kilometers (4?) before Binsar. So you don't have to go through Almora.

No..if you are travelling from Jageshwar to Binsar, the route will be..
Jageshwar--3km->Artola-6km-->Panuawanaula--10km-->Barechina(here is the bend,Almora is still 15-16kms from here)-->Dhaulchina-->Binsar. What I doubt is the connectivity from Dhaulchina to Binsar, how good the road is I dont know.

From Almora there are two routes to Binsar. One which goes via Paparsali,Kasar Devi and Kapadhkhan.Another route is via Barechina.

If you want to see the sunset, you should be at Binsar at around 4 pm.Thats easily possible even if you go Jageshwar first from Peora via Almora.Start at 8am or max 9 am in the morning from Peora you will be at Jageshwar around 12:30pm.Dont enter the Almora market it will save a lot of time, there is bifurcation just before Almora, take the road going towards Pithoragarh.
From 2pm start journey towards Binsar from Jageshwar.

You can buy Bal Mithai(sweet)from Almora and honey from Jageshwar.

One thing more..If possible try to walk from Artola to Jageshwar(3km).The road is a beauty,in the midst of Devdar trees.

Binsar to Chaukori is through Bageshwar.

BSNL works in both places. Signal may be iffy sometimes.

The sweet shop, there are quite a few, don't remember names, but many about half a kilometer from the kmvn/railway booking office at Almora, towards the town/taxi stand, and on the main road, in the main bazaar.

You have to click on the View accomodation link for rates.

Dormitory accomodation was available too, last I was there. Cant see rates, but its very cheap.

I will stay in Resort Sequester at Peora. They charge Rs.2500/day. This resort belongs to Mr Roychowdhury of kolkata. If you book directly through them, you may get some discount. I got some special discount as he was somewhat known to me. Please visit www.resortsequester.com for detail. Peora has no KMVN rest house.
KMVN Binsar charges Rs.900 for super deluxe room per day and KMVN Chaukori charges Rs. 850 for cottage room per day. In December you will get discount due to off season. You may visit www.kmvn.org for detail as suggested by Capt Mahajan.
Thanks to Capt for valuable reply.

Captain and Piyush,
Is there any rule at kumaon region which does not allow taxi drivers to operate sound system while travelling? I think both of you will answer about any restaurant/dhaba for lunch on the road from Binsar to Chaukori? I read somewhere about Tara's restaurant, where it is? Which is more enjoyable at zero point in Binsar? Sunset or sunrise? Leaving for kumaon on 2nd nov with my family and of course with Nikon DX 40 and perhaps also with Pentax MX.

No such rule that I am aware of.

Would not advise loud music, though, in hill driving.

Tara's guest house is on the ridge above Almora, a couple of kilometers on the road to Binsar. You will get good parathas and samosas at small places between here and Kasar Devi. And sweets at Almora, if you hit the town, near the KMVN place. Btw, this is not a bad place to relax for an hour, the food is quite good, place is clean and quiet. Pit stop with clean-ish toilets, too.

Bageshwar has a small dhaba (no name, I think) on the main road with alu (potato) parathas, near where the buses seem to halt. Excellent. But there are many others.

Don't worry too much about the food, plenty of options till Bageshwar. You may be slightly sick of potatoes and parathas by the time you return, but they are delicious in the hills

Binsar zero/view point is better in the morning, if it is clear.. In the evening, sitting outside the kmvn place on a clear day with the stars is a good way to have a quiet drink.

Enjoy your trip, and photographs please!
