Hey Folks,
I am off to Rishikesh for some yoga training in late January with 8 others. Everything is set up, except I am having a hard time finding a travel agent I can trust to set up some taxis to pick us up from the train station in Haridwar for the trip to Rishikesh. Can anyone recommend a reputable agent (and give me a contact number?) that might be able to hook us up?
Thanks in advance y'all.

Hi,

Haridwar to Rishikesh is just 25 KM & you will get many-2 options just outside Railway station anytime. Even Rishikesh is connected by train to Haridwar(though not soooo many trains)

Taxi (8 seater) should cost you about 500-600 Rs. Though as you are coming first time, better if you ask your Yoga camp to arrange pickup for you through their reliable agent.

At the Railways Station you'll find several shared jeeps and tempos to Risikesh. No need to book it in advance, and as far as you will take full places the price will be quite cheap.

There are busses and taxis that ply from 4.00 am till late at night between Haridwar and rishikesh. If you want a car or a jeep, just come out of the railwaystation and there is a taxi stand just by the gate. You can hire a taxi from there for Rishikesh. It will cost between 400 - 600.
Alternately you can cross the road after getting out of the Railway Station to the bus station, the bus station is right opposite the railway station and catch a bus into Rishikesh. It will cost you Rs. 18 per head.
The third option is to take a tempo (it is a 8 seater three wheeler taxi) after you get out of the railway station. This should not cost you more than 300/- for the entire tempo. If you are all foreigners, you may be asked to pay more (white tax as we like to think of it) For the locals the tariff is as above. I would take the tempo as the last option as it is a most uncomfortable ride. The buses are better and cheaper and you don;t have to worry that you are being cheated.

8 Seater Tempo is not at all comfortable(a journey of 25 KM is too much in tempo).

Great pic of the tempo Pawan. But these ones (mosquitoes as we called them) have been phased out and are obsolete. But I do agree with you it is an uncomfortable ride and I would choose the bus over hte tempo any day. The only advantage with the tempo is that you can (for a bit of extra money) ask them to drop you to where ever you are staying in Rishikesh. Beyond that I see no reason to pick a Tempo over a bus. If you are willing to pay a white tax then you would be more comfortable in a taxi.
BTW the actual cost of the ride for a single person from Haridwar to Rishikesh in a tempo is INR 20/- but they think if you are desperate enough to hire the whole tempo, you can pay a bit extra on the side too. So for a ride that would work out to 160/- INR if you were individual passangers and using the tempo as a shared ride, will cost you about 300/- if you book the tempo. Pretty strange logic to determine the rate but it is that way.

colin, just take a bus or a share-jeep, for that distance it'll be the simplest. Within Rishikesh you can take a 3-wheeler to take ou where you want to go.
Of course if you hire your own taxi you can be dropped to your hotel or wherever in Rksh.

Easy to catch a auto Rickshaw from the bus station at Rishikesh. they will take you to any hotels on the rishikesh town side ot the Ganges, like High Bank.
The buses are frequent and fast.

A quaint way to do this would be on the Haridwar - Rishkesh branch line but the timings aren't very good.

For hotels on the other side they will drop you close to the two at Swargashram or Laksman Jhula bridges, where you will have to walk the rest of the way, some of the hotels at Swargashram are quite a walk from the bridges (or jhulas) so you might want to hire a porter to carry your stuff. They have special barrows they employ for this and 20-30 rupees usually keeps them happy.
