Hi All @ IM,

Planning to visit Kumaon from May 24 to June 3 (Kathgodam to Kathgodam). There will be 7 of us (3 Sr ctzns + 2 adults + 1 child + 1 infant)

Please help me fix my itinerary
Option 1:
Binsar 2 nights --> Munsiyari 2 nights --> Chaukori 3 nights --> Kausani 2 nights --> Naukuchiatal 1 night

Worried about the day-long journey from Binsar to Munsiyari

Option 2:
Binsar 2 nights --> Chaukori 3 nights --> Munsiyari 2 nights --> Kausani 2 nights --> Naukuchiatal 1 night

Worried about the day-long journey from Munsiyari to Kausani

Q1. Should I stay in Chaukori for 2 nights and Munsiyari for 3 nights if I follow option 1 (considering that we will be reaching Munsiyari late in the afternoon/early evening) ?

Q2. What should be the best plan to include Jageshwar (enroute Binsar to Chaukori/enroute Binsar to Munsiyari), Patal Bhubaneshwar (day trip from Chaukori if we stay in Chaukori for 3 nights/en route Chaukori to Munsiyari/en route Munsiyari to Chaukori if we stay in Munsiyari for 3N & in Chaukori for 2N) & Goaldam (en route Chaukori to Kausani) in my itinerary?

Looking forward to your valuable inputs and suggestions.

Regards

Munsiyari is remote, so going to munsiyari or from munsiyari will defenitely take time. so better to start from Chaukori and comeback to chaukori if you do not want long journeys.

I would suggest the following

Kausani(2)->Chaukori(2)->Munsiyari(2)->Chaukori(1)->Binsar(2)->Naukuchiatal(1).

2 days sufficient for Munisyari. Jageshwar is not on the way from Binsar to Munsiyari. Visit Jageshwar while staying at Binsar. Gwaldam is not on the way from Chaukori to Kausani. Visit Gwaldam from Kausani (around 45 Kms). Patal is not again on the route from Chaukori to Munsiyari. If you want to cover patal while returning from Munisyari then better to stay at Patal or Gangolihat in my trip suggestion above.

If you can change the places you want to visit, I would suggest :

Ranikhet - 1 night
Kausani - 1 night
Munsiyari - 2 nights
Binsar - 2 nights
Chaukori - 1 night
Nainital - 2 nights
Mukteshwar - 1 night

Hi Sriprakash74 & Funny_in,

Thank you for your valuable tips. Could you tell me how long should it take from Munsyari to Kausani?

In my opinion, if you take option 2 and stay at Choukari for 2 nights, then you can go to Gwaldam straight from Munsyari and then to Kausani.

But one full-day journey is perhaps not avoidable unless you add another day.

So, we can expect some good photos ? In continuation with west Sikkim ?

Thanks Mousourik

I'm in two minds yet. Visibility of the slow-clad peaks during May-June may be a big issue.....Don't you think September-October should do more justice?

BTW trekked to Pindari in October last year. Will upload the pics soon.

November is perhaps the best, according to experts here.

Last year I managed to go to the Sunderbans (only a weekend trip though) in Feb, West Sikkim in June, Shantiniketan-Itonda (Terracotta temples)-Rasulpur Sabujbon in September (5days), Pindari in October (2 weeks), Digha-Shankarpur-Mandarmoni-Talsari (3 days) in December. Yet to open my account this year. Hope it starts in May.

Hi Travo,

I have replied your query to me on another thread. But I guess you still have some doubts here.

As far as stay at Chaukori/ Munsiyari is concerned - I would prefer staying more days at Chaukori. This is cos its a quaint little town and more peaceful. Munsiyari is bigger in comparison and you wont feel as much in the countryside.

Also, you can cover Patal from Chaukori on 1 day. Do keep a separate day for it. Its enjoyable.

I don't think you will be able to do Jageshwar on the way, but do check with others.

Also, if you go for option 1, do remember the drive from Binsar to Munsiyari may be much longer than the drive from Munsiyari to Kausani.

Though distances may feel small, all the turns make the drive slow.

Hello Travo,

I went to Kumaon in Oct'2009. I loved Munsiyari, the Panchchuli peaks seem at a hand-shaking distance. I stayed 2 nights, but really wanted to stay more. Munsiyari is also the trail-head for some treks, like Milam Glacier and Annapurna Base Camp. Chaukori has nice views of the mountain range, but there is nothing else you can do. I stayed 1 night in Chaukori, and personally felt that was enough.

Finally it is your choice which place you like best!

Cheers, and enjoy Kumaon!!
