Room : Luxury Dbl.(2)
C/I : 29th December'08
C/O : 31st Dec. '08
Plan : APAI
Pax : 9 adults + 1 child
Tariff : Rs.12000/couple = Rs. 24000/-
Extrabed @ Rs.2000 /day = Rs.20000/-
Child- below 5 yrs. Complimentary
5-12 yrs @ Rs.1400/day/child ( now they have made this complimentary( free) for my daughter)
above 12yrs will be considered as adult
.

The above info is for our team of 9 adults + 1 child.

The rate is Rs.12000/- per couple per day..........this includes all the meals, which is reasonable I feel....otherwise food can be costly in places like Auli.
Had J & K been trouble free, Gulmarg would have been more expensive, I believe.

btw...it would be snowing in Auli in a day or 2.

Thanks blwetorch. I believe the rooms that you have chosen are different from the ones i am looking for. There is a 3N/4D package for approx Rs.17k. So, I guess there is no room for negotiation? I am planning to be there for 3 nights sometime between 20-30 of Jan which does not happen to be anything special other than being winter.

It is true that Gulmarg is probably under priced because of security concerns. But, it is also a lot more accessible. I stay in Hyderabad and it will take me 24 hours at the minimum to be in Auli. I can be in Gulmarg in 8 hours.

I Auli, esp for skiing ideal time would be post mid Jan once enough snow has fallen. I had gone in mid Feb when we had approx 5-6 feet of snow below us. !

San-adi not sure if it is the shortest but the most used one would be from Kol to Delhi and onwards to hardiwar and onwards to Joshimath.

If you can reach directly from Kol to Haridwar by Train check on that. From haridwar to Joshimath will be by Road only

I was in Auli on the 29th, 30th and 31st of December, 2008. No snow or ice at all!

Lot of construction work is going on at the site around the Clifftop Resort( where we stayed)..........the surrounding area is all dug-up...and machines are working over-time ( SAF Winter Games in March 2009).

Clifftop- Auli without snow is bad enough( the price is too high for a resort which loses it's significance with no snow around)..........and now, even the greenery is absent.

Unfortunately, the GMVN, which is reasonably priced, is also under-going some over-hauling thanks to the same SAF Games......and therefore it is closed to public.

But the Himalaya view remains stunning and unaffected by all the construction work. I have never seen Nanda devi and Trishul up so close!

I shall write a better update of my Auli trip...once I overcome the disappointment of the absence of snow in Auli. Otherwise, I had a fantastic trip.........and had some stunning views of the Himalayas........is there anyway of uploading photos here....or is it just providing a link to some other website like Picassa or Flickr?

mid-feb seems to be the best time to be in auli......if you are interested in snow and skiing.
Yes there is a whole lot of construction work going on in war-footing to meet the Govt. of India dead-line............lots of construction machinery on the site...I shall put up some photos as well.........I suspect all the fumes must be a deterrent to snowing. Hope, it doesn't happen during Feb.....wish u all the best!

Regarding your second query..........yes...from Clifftop resort they have daily tours in Sumo to Tapovan and Badrinath area...for abt Rs.3800/-.........I shall supply you more details subsequently.

Question Auli or Gulmarg?

Hey Guys,
Im from Calcutta and also wanna go skiing this January end/early feb. Which is a better location - Auli or Gulmarg? Im a beginner-intermediate skiier and I want to take some advanced lessons too.
I figure that reaching Auli is gonna be difficult and snow may be unreliable. Add that to all these reports of construction activities and I am thinking Gulmarg may be a better option.
I wonder what you guys have to say.
Sam: I am most likely to travel alone. So if you guys are ok with it, I may also like to tag along with you.

btw.....one thing I want to add, that after this SAF Winter Games in Auli....there is a likely chance that Auli will have an all-weather, ultra-modern ski-resort with artificial ski-slopes all the year round.
That means, you shall be able to enjoy the icy landscape all year along with other facilities( which are currently under construction).

According to the Cliff-top leaflet, that you find, once you check in, one learns that the resort organizes one- day motorable ( sumo) sight-seeings to Badrinath and Mana for Rs. 3700/- and Tapovan hot-springs fro Rs.2800/- ( again Sumo). Ofcourse, you need to check out the accessability details regarding the former.....not sure, whether the route is open, all year-round. Besides these, you have the regular trekking and Chair-lift rides.
