Late Sept 12 Kathgodam to Chakouri

Am planning a trip around 24th Sept 2012. How about the road conditions from Kathgodam to Chakouri ? Time it will take by taxi ? Cost ? Any reliable cabbie that you may know from Kathgodam ? Thanks a lot.

Before Monsoons, are the roads bad? And, when and where is the Ytra season causing issues.. Is this the Haridwar and beyond route, or all routes in Uttrakhand that become busy during the yatra season?

As far as I remember, the Uttarakhand government (and earlier the UP government) used to perform maintenance work during the first quarter of every year and prepare the roads for the upcoming Yatra season. So, the roads used to be in good condition at the start of the Char Dham yatra with gradual deterioration due to heavy traffic in May and June. Usually the yatra traffic starts dwindling with the onset of monsoon in Uttarakhand i.e July, and by October it is almost one-tenth (may be less) as compared with the peak season.

There are few stretches that are prone to landslides post rains, which causes road blocks. I will furnish details in later post in this regard.

Not all routes get busy in Uttrakhand during the Yatra season. Haridwar-Uttarkashi and Haridwar-Joshimath highways recieve the maximum traffic.

Though it would be diffucult to quantify, I would say that the Kumaon region's traffic is about 25% of the Garhwal region's traffic, even during the peak tourist season.

It has started raining in the hills ! Major roadblocks are expected due to landslides...

Advisable to avoid Chardham Yatra during rainy months.

yes, monsoon is yet to arrive but what matters is water falling from skies, the more the merrier...the heat and dust had made life miserable!
