Hi all

I'm new to the site so forgive me if I'm posting an eternally answered question. We're staying in Rishikesh for 3 or 4 days in September and looking to get to Mcleodganj after that.

I'm not too keen on getting a bus the whole way there and we have more than enough time to stop over somewhere en-route if necessary. We both prefer travelling on the train but i'm having some difficulty working out the quickest route with the least changes. Anyone out there that could help?

Thanks!

Let me first declare my usual hand, and say I'd fly to Delhi from Dehradun and then to DHM.

However, on a train, I think you can get the 14609 HEMKUNT EXP from Rishikesh to Chakki Bank, and bus or auto from there. http://erail.in/?T=RKSH::PTK:#

I am absolutely no train expert, but that looks for all the world like a direct train. Not sure if the search link will work:

There is a bus direct from Rishikesh bus station to Mcleod Ganj proper, run by Gurudev travels but you can book online, it runs every second day and goes at 4pm, it arrives at 6.30am. It's got reclining seats but isn't a sleeper as such.
It costs 850INR and travels overnight, you can book online at Makemytrip

In my experience if you get the train to Chakki Bank or Pathankot and arrive before the gov buses start (just 100 INR for that, under 2 hours travel time), then you can share a small car-taxi with 3/4 others for 500 INR each to McLeod, but you must hassle hard!

Given this thread is still live, and the OP has yet to travel, readers should note that a flight into DHM is not currently possible - the services previously being provided by Kingfisher have ceased along with Kingfisher.

Fly to DED, pre-paid taxi to Rishikesh; and then train or bus to McLeod Ganj.

I've just overnight bus-ed from McLeod to Rishikesh. Rs800. 12 hours. Delux bus so the seats reclined so I'm sure you could get the same bus from Rishikesh to McLeod.
I was under the impression that to take a train, you'd take one to Pathankot and then a bus to Dharamsala/McLeod.

And how was the bus ride? Hair-raising or fine? Driver a closet Formula 1 driver with winding, dodgy roads ... Or was it all good? Trying to find out what that bus trip is really like please? *

The road is fine and well laid with some bumps in certain locations, as you'd expect in India, but nothing like your description. It is safe to travel by bus in this route.

We ended up heading back to Hoshiarpur, which is another thing altogether... But our night bus from McLeod to Rishikesh was like any other bus ride in India really, just a bit windy and bumpy in the beginning, getting down from Dharamsala. But yes, I'd agree with what Prince09 says.

What time do the gov buses start. How far is the taxi and bus from chakki bank rail station? I'm scheduled to arrive at 10.30am in chakki bank and make my way to Mcleadganj.

Smile Rishikesh to McLeod Gani

Hi I am looking for tips on how to get from Rishikesh to McLeod Ganj.

I have seen there is train to Chakki Bank but this gets in at 2:50am and as I am a single female traveler I am unsure about this, plus do not know when the buses start in the morning from Chakki Bank to McLeod Ganj?

I have looked into the night bus from Rishikesh to McLeod Ganj, there seem to be mixed messages about safety.

Could anyone give me advice on the best option?

I will be traveling on 2nd Jan 2017.

Thanks

If you have enough time consider splitting the journey up & taking a more scenic route through the Himalaya's through the day, it's a shame to travel at night & miss all the wonderful Himalayan scenery. You could catch the Kalinga Utkal Express 18478 which leaves Hardwar at 5.55am & reaches Chandigarh at 10am, from Ch'garh take a bus to Rewalsar Lake 1hr from Mandi, it's another Tibetan settlement with Buddhist monasteries around a small lake, just up the hill from here you can visit the caves of Padmasambhava where he did penance before flying to Tibet on a tiger to spread Buddhism. It's a much more laid back, peaceful place than McLeod Ganj. Spend a couple of nights in Rewalsar then take a early morning bus from Mandi to Dharamsala. KK

There are 2 bus stands in CHD, you want ISBT Sector 43, where you can get any bus passing through Mandi going to Manali, Kulu or Mandi, Jogindernagar etc.

You could go to Haridwar the night before & get a cheap room if you want to catch an early train.
