two days only?

Is it worth going to Haridwar and/or Rishikesh if I only have two days for both of them?

would you have any suggestions for the two day itinerary, out of Delhi? ie going straight to Rishikesh or spending a night in Haridwar then to Rishikesh and back to Delhi in the evening?

thanks

If you've only got 2 days, I would go straight to Rishikesh, and stay in the Swarg Ashram area. You could always do a little tour of Hardwar on your way out. Rishikesh is very mellow, Hardwar can be rather bustling. Depending on when you go, Swarg Ashram can be completely full of Westerners, and very much like an Indian attraction at Disneyland. It depends on what you like, but Swarg Ashram is a must see in my opinion.

The Swarg Ashram part of Rishikesh is almost traffic free and would be a complete change for you from Delhi. It's much more peaceful than Haridwar or the main part of Rishikesh on the other side of the Ganga.

You could take a walk along the river on the path between the two bridges and perhaps achieve sudden enlightment!

For needs of the body one of the Chotiwala's Restaurants is the place to go - excellent Indian veg food.

I'm with Sadhu. If you've only two days, then Rishikesh is the place to go to, between the two.

can you stay in this ashram overnight? Alan, that picture is very tempting... not sure what I would do with "enlightened" self afterwards, life would lose its purpose...

I'm not sure if you can stay at this particular place. There are many Swamis along this stretch of the river.

Some of the larger ashrams do have accommodation for visitors but I've always stayed in small hotels. There are some listed in the hotels section of the forum

I would take a side trip to Haridwar one afternoon for Aarti. It's a ceremony that takes place at dusk on the main ghat. I've seen ti three times and I really like it. Hardwar isn't too far from Rishikesh.

Also - if you're there when the temperature is acceptable, river rafting is definitely an option.

I took an 8 hour rapids trip and I think it's my favorite thing I've done in India. Granted, I've river rafted at home, but nothing beats rafting on a goddess with monkeys watching you. We were also able to hop out of the raft and body surf some rapids - very fun.

We started north of Rishikesh and ended just before the Lakshmi Jhula.

Rishikesh / Haridwar?

Not having my trusty lonely planet India with me i'm not sure if haridwar/rishkikesh are rajastan places of the top of my head - so i apologise in advance#

I'm having problems finding any accomm so I was wondering if anyone can recommend any accommodation that is prebookable is either of these places?
I know hostelbookers etc have a few on them but there are no feedback scores and i'd rather one person say 'yeah not bad and a good breakfast' sort of thing.

can anyone help
thanks in advance?

Right - i've been looking at my options and accommodation that is pre-bookable is difficult to find in rishikesh - is rishikesh worth going to or they both much of a muchness?
I can see that its easy enough to get there by bus in an hour so i wouldn't mind doing that and seeing things/mooching about if people think thats feasible?

I've been looking at some threads and people seem to have a much higher opinion of rishikesh - any further thoughts?

when i was in rishikesh i had to go to something like seven or eight different hotels before i found one that had vacancy. I don't know about pre bookiing though.

personally i like Haridwar better than Rishikesh. In Rishikesh there were so many tourists that I barely felt like I was in India, while in Haridwar I didn't see one single foreigner, but lots of pilgrims.
The one thing I did like about Rishikesh was that the Ganges was very clean up there and I felt safe taking a dip.

I was thinking we'd take a day trip to Rishikesh from Haridwar rather than moving between the 2, I don't know but Haridwar somehow seems like it would be less touristy...

The evening "Arti" at Haridwar shouldn't be missed. OP hasn't mentioned when she intends to visit. There are many beautiful places in the Garhwal region. Devpryag is one such cool place not too far from Rishikesh.

Great, this thread has really helped - i'm definetly going to stay in haridwar and if after talking to people riskikesh is an option i'll go for a couple of hours.

BUT my original problem remains in that i can't find prebookable accommodation - it kinda goes against my grain but does anyone think i would have a problem if i just turned up?

thanks again
